Deadpool and Wolverine Earn $205 Million

Deadpool & Wolverine topped the box office this weekend. The Marvel Studios/20th Century/Disney film grossed $205 million domestically and $438 million globally. Officially, this makes the Marvel Cinematic Universe the first franchise to cross the $30 billion dollar box office mark, according to Variety.

Fans were clearly eager to watch a film where an Australian actor plays a Canadian hero, while a real Canadian actor portrays a self-aware antihero. The promotional campaign for Deadpool & Wolverine was omnipresent, featuring numerous late-night appearances, an endorsement from Taylor Swift, and spots on significant internet shows with Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman.

Keeping with the highly digital promotion of the movie, the stars celebrated their box office success with a meme—a take on the Sad Wolverine from the original X-Men cartoon.

In second place this weekend was Twisters. It remains uncertain if the disaster film could have secured the top spot with either more romance or acknowledgment of climate change.

Following Twisters were two sequels geared towards younger audiences: Despicable Me 4 and Inside Out 2. The horror film Longlegs completed the top five list, enjoying its third consecutive week in the top five.
