Deadpool Director Develops Secret Level, Animated Game Series for Prime Video

Deadpool director Tim Miller and Blur Studio are reportedly developing a new animated series named Secret Level. According to Deadline, the series will be produced by Amazon’s Prime Video and feature an anthology format, focusing on various video games. While details are limited at this stage, potential titles that could appear in the series include Spelunky and New World, the latter of which is owned by Amazon. Additionally, games from PlayStation’s catalog might also make appearances, although no specific titles have been confirmed.

An anthology series based on different video games is a fascinating idea. The concept somewhat echoes the 1980s animated show Saturday Supercade, which featured short cartoons inspired by games like Donkey Kong, Frogger, and Q*Bert. However, video games have evolved significantly since then, and the new series is likely to include a broad range of beloved titles, especially if it becomes successful. Unlike its predecessor, Secret Level is aimed at an adult audience, which sets it apart.

In recent years, we’ve seen a surge in video game adaptations for both TV and film, with major franchises such as Mario, Sonic, and Halo leading the charge. Even smaller games like Vampire Survivors and Among Us have seen adaptations. Prime Video has been particularly committed to this trend; their previous adaptations include Fallout as well as announced projects like Tomb Raider and Yakuza/Like a Dragon. Thus, it’s not entirely unexpected to hear about another adaptation like Secret Level being in the works.

A formal announcement for Secret Level is anticipated soon, possibly during the Gamescom Opening Night Live event. Scheduled for Tuesday, August 20th at 11 a.m. PT, host Geoff Keighley has hinted at “some new game announcements,” leading to speculation that this could include news about the animated series too.
