Deadpool & Wolverine Concept Art Reveals Unreleased Variant

The cameo-filled Deadpool & Wolverine ventured into the multiverse, presenting various versions of Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) and Logan (Hugh Jackman). Among the highlights was the Deadpool Corps, a group comprising “one hundred kill-thirsty” Deadpools. This ensemble included Lady Deadpool (Blake Lively), Kidpool and Babypool (Inez and Olin Reynolds), Headpool (Nathan Fillion), and Cowboypool (Matthew McConaughey), a gun-slinging variant. Additionally, fans saw alternate-universe Wolverines, such as Old Man Logan, Comic-Accurate Short King Wolverine, and the Cavillrine (Henry Cavill).

However, one intriguing variant never made it beyond conceptualization: a Deadpool/Wolverine amalgamation. Concept artist David Masson, known for his work on Marvel Studios’ WandaVision and Thor: Love and Thunder before Deadpool 3, unveiled the Wade Wilson Wolverine through concept art shared on Instagram.

“Wolverinepool! Or Wolverpool, Deadverine?” Masson captioned the post, revealing the concept developed by costume designer Mayes Rubeo. He continued, “One of the variants that didn’t make the cut, unfortunately.”

In another Instagram post, Masson gave a sneak peek at other Deadpool variants that didn’t make it to the final film, such as Punkpool, a Lucha libre Deadpool, and Grannypool, who bore a resemblance to Bea Arthur—a nod to Wade’s known affection for Golden Girls.

Masson also shared a fresh look at Nicepool, a friendly and handsome Deadpool variant portrayed by an unmasked Reynolds, without Wade’s disfigurements. “It was so fun to work on this character and so many others under the leadership of @mayesrubeo,” Masson wrote. “Mayes had the great idea of doing a candy paint finish on some of his armor; it came out great. Also, the forearm and leg armor were directly taken from an earlier version @andyparkart did of the main Deadpool costume but with different color and material layouts.”

Concept artist Wesley Burt showcased illustrations of Wolverine variants that made it into the movie. These included Age of Apocalypse Weapon X and the eyepatch-clad Patch, both portrayed by Jackman. Meanwhile, concept artist Rodney Fuentebella revealed an early illustration showing T-Rex Deadpool and lightsaber-wielding Deadpools battling alongside Ben Affleck’s Daredevil, Jennifer Garner’s Elektra, Wesley Snipes’ Blade, Chris Evans’ Human Torch, and Nicolas Cage’s Ghost Rider.

These conceptual pieces and more will be featured in the upcoming book Marvel Studios’ Deadpool & Wolverine: The Art of the Movie. This 224-page art book promises a gallery of never-before-seen artwork and will be available for purchase on October 29th.
