Deadpool & Wolverine Concept Art Shows Potential Marvel Comics Universe in Film

Deadpool & Wolverine arrived in theaters nearly a month ago, thrilling fans with a wild journey through the Marvel multiverse. According to a recent Instagram post from Marvel Studios Director of Visual Development Andy Park, the film nearly included a surprising homage to Marvel Comics. Park shared an early piece of art he created for Deadpool & Wolverine, in which Wade Wilson / Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) would have ended up in the literal universe of Marvel Comics.

Park’s visualization of this potential scene shows Deadpool and the original six Avengers of the MCU depicted in distinct art styles, reminiscent of their most iconic comic artists. While Park did not specify the exact references, fans have speculated that the styles could include Bob Layton’s Iron Man, Jack Kirby’s Captain America, and Sal Buscema’s Hulk.

"In my last post, I was honoring my first boss (and creator of Deadpool) in @robliefeld," Park’s caption reads. "This post shows how I honored MANY comic book legends during preproduction on Deadpool and Wolverine before there was even a script. I pitched a fun idea where Deadpool would jump through multiverses and arrive at the MCU’s Marvel COMICS Universe! Each character would exist in the art style of a legendary comic book artist. Each who have inspired me greatly! Can you name all of these legendary artists/creators? This piece (and more) will also be included in the upcoming The Art of Deadpool and Wolverine."

Given Deadpool & Wolverine‘s multiversal themes and its significant box office success, fans are wondering if Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman will return to their roles in the future, especially with the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.

In an interview with Variety, both actors remained coy about their future roles. "I don’t know," Reynolds said. "Yeah, we’ll see. Yeah." Jackman added, "Clearly, this is our first major interview of this press tour. I’m not sure how to answer."

In Marvel Studios’ Deadpool & Wolverine, Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) alters the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Wolverine (Hugh Jackman). The film also stars Matthew Macfadyen as Paradox and Emma Corrin as Cassandra Nova. Additionally, Deadpool alums Morena Baccarin (Vanessa Carlysle), Leslie Uggams (Blind Al), Karan Soni (Dopinder), Stefan Kapicic (Piotr Rasputin/Colossus), Brianna Hildebrand (Negasonic Teenage Warhead), Rob Delaney (Peter), and Lewis Tan (Shatterstar) return. Aaron Stanford reprises his role as Pyro from the X-Men film series, and Jennifer Garner is rumored to return as Elektra Natchios.

Kevin Feige, Ryan Reynolds, Shawn Levy, and Lauren Shuler Donner produce Deadpool & Wolverine, with Louis D’Esposito, Wendy Jacobson, Mary McLaglen, Josh McLaglen, Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, George Dewey, and Simon Kinberg serving as executive producers. The film is written by Ryan Reynolds, Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, Zeb Wells, and Shawn Levy. It was released exclusively in theaters on July 26th.
