Did Eminem Diss Kendrick Lamar on His New Album?

Eminem’s new album, The Death of Slim Shady (Coupe de Grâce), has sparked considerable discussion among fans, especially due to some controversial lyrics. Released last Friday, the album opens with the track “Renaissance,” where Slim Shady name-drops several well-known rappers.

The lines “’Cause I don’t see no fans, all I see’s a bunch of complainers/’Kendrick’s album was cool, but it didn’t have any bangers,'” have led some to speculate that Eminem might be taking shots at Kendrick Lamar. He goes on to mention other artists, rapping, “‘Wayne’s album or Ye’s, couldn’t tell you which one was lamer/Joyner’s album was corny/Shady’s new sh*t is way worse.”

These lines have been interpreted by some fans on social media as disses. One tweet read, “Eminem took a shot at Kendrick in his new album,” while another user wrote, “Eminem just cooked Kendrick, Lil Wayne and Kanye back to back looool.”

However, it appears Eminem is speaking from the perspective of a critic or hater, rather than directly dissing Kendrick or the other artists named. The theme seems to revolve around the constant criticism that successful artists face.

Yet, one person who clearly did catch a stray shot is Ja Rule, who is mentioned on the track “Guilty Conscience 2.”

Leading up to the album’s release, Eminem dropped two singles, “Houdini” and “Tobey.” “Houdini” was released on May 31 and is a tribute to the famous escape artist Harry Houdini. The single samples the 1982 Steve Miller Band song “Abracadabra,” and is accompanied by a humorous music video.

The second single, “Tobey,” dropped on June 28 and features Big Sean and BabyTron. The video for “Tobey,” directed by Cole Bennett, is cinematic and features appearances by the three Detroit natives. The video was shot around what appears to be Eminem’s childhood home in Detroit.

The new album comprises 19 tracks with guest appearances from artists like JID and Skylar Grey. One of the highlights is a sequel to the track “Guilty Conscience.”

Marshall Mathers, aka Eminem, has hinted that this album might be his last. Back in May, he connected with magician David Blaine for a curious FaceTime call to tease the release of “Houdini.” During the call, the two discussed how Eminem could “disappear” his career. Blaine then ended the call by chewing a wine glass, shocking everyone present.
