Director Fede Álvarez Banned from Subreddit for “Impersonating” Himself

This article contains spoilers for Alien: Romulus.

Despite helming the week’s biggest movie, some critics of Fede Álvarez remain unconvinced.

The Alien: Romulus director made a brief appearance on an Alien franchise subreddit this week to discuss his new sequel with fans. However, the subreddit moderators were skeptical, flagging Álvarez as an imposter and issuing a notice that he was “permanently banned” from the forum.

“Got banned from the ALIEN subreddit for apparently trying to impersonate myself,” Álvarez wrote on X, accompanied by a laughing emoji and a screenshot of the message.

The moderator later provided an update stating that Álvarez “was immediately reinstated and had a very friendly conversation with us. Awesome guy.”

Álvarez responded graciously. “I’m sorry, just found it hilarious,” he wrote. “My bad. No harm done. Thanks again for such great work moderating my favorite subreddit.”

Before being banned from the thread, Álvarez confirmed a fan’s SPOILER-heavy theory regarding the characters Bjorn (Spike Fearn) and his pregnant cousin Kay (Isabela Merced).

“Right before Bjorn’s death, he and Kay share a moment where they touch each other in a very intimate way. Am I the only one who thought this was a sign that Bjorn is the ‘jerk’ who got her pregnant?” the redditor asked. Álvarez replied, “Yes he is. Good catch!”

The seventh installment in the franchise, set between Ridley Scott’s Alien (1979) and Aliens (1986), follows a group of young space colonizers scavenging a derelict space station, only to come face-to-face with a xenomorph.

Co-written by Álvarez and Rodo Sayagues, Alien: Romulus stars Cailee Spaeny, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, and Aileen Wu. The film opened to $108.2 million globally, marking the second-best opening for the franchise and a career high for Álvarez and Spaeny.
