Grocery stores in five states are recalling cantaloupes due to potential salmonella contamination, according to an announcement from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Eagle Produce LLC, based in Scottsdale, Arizona, has initiated a recall of 224 cases of whole cantaloupe. This recall was posted on the FDA’s website late last week.

The decision to recall the cantaloupes follows a salmonella outbreak last year that resulted in several fatalities and hundreds of illnesses in the U.S. and Canada, as reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The current recall was triggered by routine testing conducted by state health officials in Michigan, revealing the presence of salmonella in some cantaloupe sold at various retail locations.

As of now, the FDA has not received any reports of illness connected to this recent recall.

Consumers should be aware that the cantaloupes included in this recall bear the brand name “Kandy” and were distributed in five states between August 13 and 17. The recalled cantaloupe has a UPC label of 4050 and a lot code of 846468.

The states affected by this recall include:

  • Michigan
  • Missouri
  • Ohio
  • Texas
  • Virginia

Salmonella is a bacteria that can lead to severe and sometimes fatal infections, particularly in vulnerable populations such as children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems. According to the CDC, symptoms typically manifest as diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever within 12 to 72 hours after consuming contaminated food.

While most people recover from salmonella infections without the need for medical intervention, there are cases where hospitalization may be necessary. Pregnant women are especially at risk and should seek medical advice if they exhibit any symptoms related to salmonella infection.

Consumers who have purchased the recalled cantaloupe should dispose of it immediately and avoid consuming it.

Additionally, it is important to follow the FDA’s recommendations for safe handling and cleaning. This includes maintaining vigilant sanitation of surfaces and containers that may have been exposed to the recalled cantaloupes to help prevent cross-contamination.

If individuals experience any symptoms of illness linked to consuming the affected cantaloupes, it is crucial to seek medical attention. For further inquiries, consumers may contact Eagle Produce directly at 1-800-627-8674.

It is essential for shoppers to remain informed and cautious regarding food recalls to ensure their health and safety.
