Disney Reveals New Pixar, Marvel, Lucasfilm Projects at Star-Studded D23 Panel

Bob Iger received a rock star-worthy welcome Friday night, as around 12,000 enthusiastic fans gave the Disney CEO a standing ovation at the start of a major panel at D23.

“Wow. That was more than a warm welcome,” Iger expressed to the crowd, adding, “Boy did I miss you.”

This marked a homecoming for Iger, who had temporarily retired two years ago during the last D23. This event allows Disney to showcase upcoming projects from Pixar, Marvel, Lucasfilm, and 20th Century.

Disney is renowned for bringing out numerous A-list stars. This year’s panel took place at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif., allowing roughly twice as many attendees as in previous years. Before the panel kicked off, a pep squad energized the crowd, handing out light-up bracelets and envelopes featuring magician David Blaine’s logo and a deck of cards.

Moana 2 stars Auli’i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson got the crowd moving by performing a song from the upcoming sequel. “Maui is singing again. Singing in keys that don’t exist. And my hair looks fantastic in Moana 2,” quipped Johnson, giving a shoutout to his six and eight-year-old daughters in the audience.

The film is a follow-up to the landmark 2016 original, which has consistently been one of the most streamed movies globally for several years. Initially slated as a Disney+ TV series, it was upgraded to a theatrical release.

Audiences were treated to a new trailer, which hasn’t yet been released online. Following the trailer, Johnson introduced Disney Entertainment co-chair Alan Bergman, humorously calling him “my twin.”
