Divers Retrieve Last Body from Wreck of Sicily Superyacht

On Friday, divers successfully recovered the final body from the wreckage of the sunken superyacht off the coast of Sicily, as reported by the Associated Press. This announcement was made by the Italian coast guard, confirming that the last missing body had been located.

This body, identified as that of an 18-year-old woman named Hannah Lynch, is the sixth to be retrieved from the Bayesian superyacht, which tragically sank on Monday. Hannah Lynch was the daughter of Mike Lynch, a U.K. tech entrepreneur, whose body was discovered on Thursday. Hannah’s mother, Angela Bacares, was among the 15 survivors rescued by the Italian coast guard when the yacht went down during an unexpected weather event.

A total of 22 individuals were aboard the Bayesian at the time of the incident, and seven fatalities have now been confirmed. The other victims included Jonathan Bloomer and his wife Judith, along with lawyer Christopher Morvillo and his wife Neda Morvillo, all of whom were identified after their bodies were retrieved by coast guard divers on Thursday.

The first casualty from the accident was the yacht’s chef, Recaldo Thomas, whose body was found shortly after the vessel capsized on Monday.

In response to the tragic event, Hannah’s school, Latymer Upper School, expressed their sorrow in a statement shared with the media. They conveyed their shock and condolences, expressing concern for both Hannah and her father, while they awaited further updates regarding the situation.

The sinking of the Bayesian occurred when it was swept up by a freak tornado, which caused significant destruction. The yacht, valued at approximately $18 million, came to rest more than 164 feet below the water’s surface, necessitating extensive search efforts by divers throughout the week.

Fire rescue crews encountered challenges in accessing the below-deck cabins after the storm shifted debris, blocking potential entry points. They reported that access was limited to the yacht’s bridge due to the presence of furnishings obstructing the divers’ passage.

A spokesperson from the Italian coast guard indicated that discussions regarding the future plan to raise the sunken yacht from the seabed are not currently underway but may be considered later.

Some of the rescued survivors are still in Italy receiving medical care following the tragedy, with at least one child, aged one year, transported to a children’s hospital in Palermo for treatment.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, revealing the devastating impact of unexpected weather phenomena at sea and raising concerns about the safety measures in place for luxury vessels.

As the investigation continues, authorities are expected to closely examine the circumstances surrounding the events leading up to the sinking in an effort to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
