Douglas Emhoff Describes Kamala Harris as a ‘Joyful Warrior’ in DNC Speech

During the Democratic National Convention, Douglas Emhoff, the Second Gentleman of the United States, delivered a heartfelt speech emphasizing his admiration for his wife, Vice President Kamala Harris. He referred to her as a “joyful warrior,” showcasing his support as she campaigns for re-election.

Emhoff took the stage in Chicago, expressing gratitude to Harris for her dedicated public service and her unwavering strength. He highlighted her empathy, noting that she finds joy in her mission for justice.

“She will lead with joy and toughness,” said Emhoff. “With that laugh and that look, with compassion and conviction. She’ll lead from the belief that wherever we come from, we’re strongest when we fight for what we believe, and not just against what we fear.”

His speech included a personal touch, as Emhoff recounted a funny story about how they met. A client had given him Harris’ phone number after they were set up on a blind date, leading him to joke, “For generations, people have debated when to call the person you’re being set up with. And never in history has anyone suggested 8:30 a.m.”

He spoke fondly of their connection, adding that he was drawn to her infectious laugh. Emhoff also acknowledged Harris’s loving role as a stepmother to his children, who affectionately call her “Mamala.” He asserted that Harris would similarly prioritize the nation’s children if she were to continue her role as Vice President.

In response to President Joe Biden’s decision not to seek re-election, Emhoff took to social media to thank Biden for his “honesty, decency, and integrity.” He praised both Biden and Harris for their tireless efforts on behalf of families and communities across the nation, expressing pride in their combined accomplishments and leadership.

Emhoff’s role as the Second Gentleman includes being a vocal advocate at events like the Democratic National Convention, which is focused on rallying support for Democratic candidates. If Harris is re-elected, Emhoff will make history as the first man to serve as First Gentleman of the United States.

The couple first connected in 2013 through a mutual friend on a blind date and married a year later. They are celebrating a decade of marriage. The wedding took place in Santa Barbara, California, officiated by Harris’ sister, Maya. This union marked Harris’ first marriage and Emhoff’s second; he shares two children, Cole and Ella, with his first wife, film producer Kerstin Emhoff.

Emhoff previously worked as an entertainment lawyer, specializing in cases related to fraud, breach of contract, and false advertising, before stepping into his current role. His experience uniquely positions him to support his wife’s political journey and the causes they advocate for.

The Democratic National Convention is being held from August 19 to 22 in Chicago, Illinois, with the United Center serving as the main venue. This marks the eleventh time Chicago has hosted the Democratic Convention, with its last occurrence in 1996 when President Bill Clinton was nominated for a second term.

The convention, titled “For the People, For Our Future,” is structured around nightly themes, each designed to engage and inspire attendees. The themes for the convention include “For the People,” “A Bold Vision for America’s Future,” “A Fight for Our Freedoms,” and “For Our Future.”

The DNC provides live coverage of the event, allowing viewers to engage with the speeches and activities from the comfort of their homes. This year’s convention aims to further galvanize supporters and chart a path forward for the Democratic Party.

As the days of the convention unfold, Emhoff’s passionate support for Harris remains a focal point, illustrating the personal and public stakes of their shared political journey.
