Drake Admits Writing Song About Serena Williams, Despite Featuring Rihanna

Since May, Kendrick Lamar has made it nearly impossible to discuss Drake without mentioning their feud, which Lamar largely won. Recently, Drake has given fans new material to talk about by uploading three unreleased songs. These tracks, “It’s Up” featuring 21 Savage and Young Thug, “Housekeeping Knows” featuring Latto, and “Blue Green Red,” along with various other unreleased content, were part of a collection called “100 Gigs,” promoted as “100 gigs for your headtop.”

One behind-the-scenes video from this collection has garnered particular attention. The video, reposted on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) by a user named Ahmed, shows Drake in the studio smoking a hookah while “Too Good” plays in the background.

In the video, Drake is heard saying, “This is more about me and Serena,” referring to tennis legend Serena Williams. “It’s funny because when I make songs about women, I also make songs for them, so I know what kind of song to make. If I’m gonna talk about them, I’ll at least do them the justice of making them a song that they like.”

Drake continues, “So, I know Serena very well, and I know that she’ll hear it loud and clear, but she’ll also not hate me for it because it’s light-hearted.”

During this conversation, Drake was speaking to his mother, Sandi Graham, who was off-camera. She commented, “And she is seeing someone else.” Drake exasperatingly replied, “I don’t know, Mom.”

The song “Too Good,” featuring Rihanna, another of Drake’s exes, was released in early 2016. While the newly released video does not have a date, Drake was rumored to be romantically involved with Williams in 2015. By late 2015, Williams was linked to Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, who has been her husband for nearly seven years.

It was already known that some of Drake’s lyrics were aimed at Williams. In “Middle Of The Ocean” from his 2022 joint album with 21 Savage, Her Loss, he raps, “Sidebar, Serena, your husband a groupie / He claim we don’t got a problem but / No, boo, it is like you comin’ for sushi.” Ohanian seemed to respond on X, writing, “The reason I stay winning is because I’m relentless about being the absolute best at whatever I do — including being the best groupie for my wife & daughter.”

Last month, Williams hosted the 2024 ESPY Awards and took the opportunity to playful shade Drake during her opening monologue.

“If I’ve learned anything this year, it’s that none of us — not a single one of us, not even me — should ever pick a fight with Kendrick Lamar,” said the 23-time Grand Slam singles champion. “He will make your hometown not like you. The next time Drake sits courtside at a [Toronto] Raptors game, they’re gonna Forrest Gump him. ‘Seat’s taken!’”

Clearly, the intertwined stories of these public figures continue to captivate fans. While the music and behind-the-scenes moments provide entertainment, it remains to be seen how these feuds and friendships will evolve over time.
