Drake Didn’t Buy the BMW in Which Tupac Was Shot, Despite Rumors

Drake is widely recognized as an avid collector of hip-hop memorabilia. However, one notable item he hasn’t acquired is the BMW in which Tupac Shakur was shot. A recent photo making rounds on the internet led fans to believe that the Toronto rapper had purchased the iconic vehicle.

Last Saturday (July 20), Drake posted on Instagram a photo of a friend standing beside a black BMW e350. The image sparked a whirlwind of speculation on social media, with many rap fans suspecting that Drake had bought the same vehicle Tupac Shakur was fatally shot in during a drive-by in Las Vegas in 1996.

Nevertheless, car aficionados quickly noticed that the BMW in Drake’s photo is not the BMW that Tupac Shakur was in. The legendary West Coast rapper was in a black BMW 7-series when he was shot on September 7, 1996. Suge Knight was driving the black 1996 BMW 750iL, with Shakur in the passenger seat. While they were stopped at a red light, a white Cadillac pulled up beside them, and gunfire erupted. Shakur was hit four times and later died on September 13 at age 25. Knight survived, with minor injuries from bullet fragments.

The car Tupac was shot in remains on auction at Celebrity Cars Las Vegas, with a price tag of $1.75 million. While this detail is well-known among many rap fans, others genuinely believed Drake had bought the car, given the striking similarity in color between the vehicles.

“Oh he tryna lose his Cali card. He big mad he lost 😂. #Westcoast #notlikeus,” commented one individual on Instagram under the OurGenerationMusic repost of Drake’s photo.

“Bro thinks he can buy his way thru a beef,” another fan chimed in.

“The colonizer strike[s] again,” posted a Drake critic.

Despite the rumors, some hip-hop fans were quick to point out that the interiors and rims of the two BMWs are distinctly different. The Tupac Shakur fan page @2pacunlimited addressed the confusion directly, “Why don’t ya’ll hit up @celebritycars before assuming anything? And that looks like a 3 series to me lol…,” they posted on Instagram.

While Drake didn’t acquire the infamous Tupac BMW, his collection of hip-hop memorabilia is indeed remarkable. In January, Drake revealed in the music video for “Jumbotron Sh*t Poppin” that he had purchased Pharrell’s jewelry collection at auction. Items included Skateboard P’s famous multi-color N.E.R.D pendant chain, BAPE astronaut bust, N.E.R.D brain pendants, and skateboard charms, which are now part of Drake’s ever-growing collection.

That summer, Drake mentioned in Travis Scott’s “Meltdown” that he might have melted down some of the chains in response to his ongoing feud with Pusha T. He raps, “I melt down the chains that I bought from your boss, give a f**k about all of that heritage sh*t/Since V not around the members done hung up the Louis they not even wearing that sh*t.” However, the supposed melted chains resurfaced in the “Family Matters” music video during another feud with Kendrick Lamar.

Drake’s purchase of Tupac Shakur’s crown ring last summer also attracted attention. The OVO leader spent over $1 million on the gold, ruby, and diamond piece at Sotheby’s auction house. The extravagant buy became a talking point in his rap battle with Kendrick Lamar. In his diss track “Euphoria,” Kendrick took a jab at Drake, “Somebody had told me that you got a ring, on God, I’m ready to double the wage/I rather do that than let a comedian ni**a make ’Pac turn in his grave.”

Fans speculate that Drake likely owns even more coveted hip-hop artifacts that he’s keeping under wraps. As he continues to amass his collection, it’s clear that Drake’s passion for hip-hop history remains unmatched.
