Drake’s 100GB Leak: Rihanna-Assisted “Too Good” Inspired by Serena Williams

Drake surprised fans this week by releasing 100 gigabytes of unreleased content, including three new songs featuring Young Thug, 21 Savage, and Latto. An intriguing piece of this content drop was a video where Drake revealed that his 2016 song “Too Good,” featuring Rihanna, was actually inspired by tennis star Serena Williams.

The video, released Tuesday (Aug. 6), showcases Drake in the studio with his mother, Sandra Graham, and producer Noah “40” Shebib. In a candid moment, as they wrapped up “Too Good,” Sandra asks Drake if he often talks about his past relationships in his songs. Drake replies, “I get heavy on a couple joints but this is more about me and Serena [Williams],” to which his mother laughingly confirms, “I gathered! I gathered that!”

Drake elaborates, “When I make songs about women, I also make songs for them so I know what kind of song to make. If I’m gonna talk about them, I’ll at least do them the justice of making them a song that they like, okay? So I know Serena very well. And I know that she’ll hear it loud and clear, but she’ll also not hate me for it because it’s lighthearted.” His mother adds, “And she’s seeing someone else,” to which Drake coyly replies, “I don’t know, mom.”

The clip sheds light on the romantic history between Drake and Serena Williams, who were linked from 2010 to 2015. During this period, Drake was frequently spotted at her tennis matches and even tweeted flirtatiously about her in 2011: “@SerenaWilliams I cannot wait to put it on you and make you sweat……. during our match this weekend.” The rapper also mentioned Serena in his 2013 song “Worst Behavior.”

Their relationship attracted public attention, including a rumored feud with Chicago rapper Common. Common hinted in an interview that the tensions between them might have been due to both having feelings for Serena. Over the years, Drake continued to show up at Serena’s matches, and there were two documented instances of them kissing.

In a 2019 interview, Drake mentioned that Serena inspired his 2015 diss track “Back To Back,” targeting Meek Mill. However, the recent video indicates their relationship had cooled by the time “Too Good” was created, around the time Drake and Rihanna were linked romantically. Serena’s engagement to Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian in 2016 confirmed the end of her romance with Drake.

Drake’s song “Nothings Into Somethings” from his 2017 project “More Life” reflects on Serena’s engagement, with lyrics like “Did I just read that you just got engaged on me?/ I heard from your friend, you couldn’t even tell me/ Or better yet, wait on me.”

Tensions between Drake and Serena’s camp continue today. On his 2022 track “Middle Of The Ocean,” from the album “Her Loss,” Drake took a swipe at Ohanian, calling him a “groupie.” Ohanian responded on X, embracing the title, saying, “The reason I stay winning is because I’m relentless about being the absolute best at whatever I do — including being the best groupie for my wife & daughter.”

Serena herself touched on Drake’s recent struggles, notably his feud with Kendrick Lamar. During the 2024 ESPYs, she remarked, “And if I’ve learned anything this year, it’s that none of us—not a single one of us, not even me—should ever pick a fight with Kendrick Lamar.” She alluded to the impact Lamar had on Drake’s public image, ending with a humorous jab about Drake’s future at Raptors games.
