A historic house in Liverpool, known for hosting some of The Beatles’ earliest gigs in its basement, has been revived and listed on Airbnb.

Mona Best, the lively mother of Pete Best, the band’s original drummer, inaugurated the Casbah Coffee Club in Liverpool’s West Derby suburb in 1959, shortly before The Beatles officially formed.

The Beatles performed over 40 times in the home’s basement, nestled on a picturesque residential street. This venue also hosted 13 gigs by John Lennon’s initial band, The Quarrymen.

Initially, the Casbah started with Saturday night gigs but soon expanded to open from Friday through Sunday. Although it closed its doors three years afterward, its legacy remains as a magnet for Beatles fans worldwide.

The house has now been converted into suites named after the members of the Fab Four, except for Ringo Starr’s suite, which is named after Pete Best. Stuart Sutcliffe, the original bass guitarist for the band, also has a room dedicated to him.

“The Beatles played here, The Beatles partied here and The Beatles slept here,” Pete Best told Britain’s Press Association (PA) news agency, which first reported the house’s transformation into holiday rental accommodation.

At 82, Best said the conversion was meant as a “lasting tribute” to the iconic band. He has been working on the house’s transformation since 2020, partnering with his younger brother Roag, 62, the son of The Beatles’ road manager Neil Aspinall.

The rooms have been thoughtfully decorated with Beatles memorabilia, including photos, posters, and guitars adorning the walls. The legendary basement has been preserved with its 1960s charm, featuring original drum kits and “John I’m back” inscribed into the ceiling above the stage.

Since early August, the five suites above have been available for booking, attracting guests from various parts of Britain and the United States. However, they have yet to receive any reviews.

Under Airbnb’s “what makes my home unique” section, the brothers jokingly wrote, “The Beatles played and stayed here.”

Prices for staying in this iconic residence start at around £125 ($163) per night.

Roag revealed to PA that he was actually born in the room now known as the McCartney suite while most of the band was downstairs. “So upon being born I was basically presented to The Beatles,” he said.

Having grown up in the property, Roag left when he was 24 years old. He recalled that McCartney enjoyed playing in the Casbah because “it was like playing a big house party” and felt like a secure space to experiment with new material.

Explaining the absence of a suite named after Ringo Starr, Roag emphasized that it was about “being authentic.” He added, “The Beatles that performed and partied here were John, Paul, George, Pete, and Stuart.”
