Eddie Murphy Aims to Remake Classic ‘It’s a Mad Mad Mad Mad World’

Eddie Murphy is gearing up to reunite on screen with fellow comedian and actor Martin Lawrence. Entertainment Tonight caught up with Murphy on the red carpet of his much-anticipated sequel, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, where he spoke warmly about his friendship with Lawrence. With Lawrence recently releasing the fourth installment of his successful cop action film, Bad Boys: Ride or Die, and Murphy making a comeback in the cop genre, fans are curious if a crossover is in the works. Murphy and Lawrence have previously shared the screen in 1992’s Boomerang and 1999’s Life. However, Murphy has other plans for reuniting with his longtime friend.

“I got this other idea for something with Martin,” Murphy shared. “I’ve been developing it for years. Did you ever see a movie It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World? Well, I got a script. It will be delivered any minute now, written by Jez Butterworth, and I’m trying to do a remake of that movie.”

The original film, released in 1963, revolves around a group of motorists who discover the location of a hidden stash of loot and race against each other in a mad dash to be the first to find the treasure. The cast of this classic included Spencer Tracy, Milton Berle, Sid Caesar, Buddy Hackett, Ethel Merman, Mickey Rooney, Edie Adams, Dick Shawn, Jonathan Winters, Andy Devine, Norman Fell, Peter Falk, Sterling Holloway, Buster Keaton, and Carl Reiner.

“It’s one of my favorite movies of all time and if I do it, if the script turns out right, it’s gonna be a cast of all the who’s who of comedians,” Murphy said with excitement. “Anybody that was funny over the last 30 years is going to be in this movie.”

Interestingly, Murphy’s son, Eric, and Lawrence’s daughter, Jasmin, are dating. If they decide to get married, Murphy told ET that he’ll be generous with the wedding expenses. “Well, customarily the father pays for the daughter, am I correct? That’s the way it goes down,” Murphy humorously noted, implying the financial responsibility would fall on Lawrence. “It shouldn’t be an issue, you know? Bad Boys is out of the park, and Martin has lots and lots of money, so he should be able to pay for a splendid wedding.”

Fans are eagerly awaiting more details about Murphy’s remake and the possibility of seeing him and Lawrence share the screen once again. Their previous collaborations have shown their incredible chemistry, and a new project would undoubtedly generate significant interest and excitement.

Murphy’s enthusiasm for the remake of It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World indicates his dedication to bringing a classic to a new generation of viewers. The prospect of assembling a stellar cast of comedians spanning the last few decades only adds to the anticipation. As the script’s final touches are awaited, both Murphy’s and Lawrence’s fans are on the edge of their seats, eager to see what this dynamic duo will bring to the screen next.

With both actors remaining prominent in the industry and their children potentially tying the knot, the Murphy-Lawrence connection seems destined to grow stronger both on and off the screen. Their shared history and ongoing projects promise a future filled with laughter and collaboration.

The camaraderie between Murphy and Lawrence extends beyond their professional lives, blending seamlessly with their personal connections. This blend only serves to enrich their collaborative efforts, making their projects even more appealing to audiences worldwide.

As Murphy continues to develop his ambitious projects and Lawrence maintains his action-packed film success, their potential crossover or new joint ventures will certainly be something to look forward to. With promises of comedic genius and heartfelt friendship, the future of Murphy and Lawrence’s on-screen partnership looks incredibly bright.
