TAIPEI, Taiwan–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Jul 16, 2024–

The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) is currently hosting a retrospective film series titled “Edward Yang’s Taipei Stories,” running until July 30. This series offers audiences a chance to delve into the social and generational conflicts that Taiwan grappled with during its rapid urbanization in the 1980s through Edward Yang’s cinematic lens.

Curated by TIFF senior curator Andréa Picard, in collaboration with the Taipei Cultural Center in New York, the series features seven feature films and one short film by the renowned filmmaker Edward Yang. These films are categorized into three sections: the urban trilogy with “That Day, on the Beach,” “Taipei Story,” and “Terrorizers;” the novelistic works “Expectations,” “A Brighter Summer Day,” and “Yi Yi;” and social satires “A Confucian Confusion” and “Mahjong.”

Edward Yang is a seminal figure in the 1980s Taiwan New Wave Cinema, known internationally for his profound storytelling and cinematic style. He holds the distinction of being the first Taiwanese director to win the Best Director Award at the Cannes Film Festival. His accolades also include the Special Jury Prize at the Berlin International Film Festival, the Best Director Award at the Singapore International Film Festival, and several honors at the Golden Horse Awards, such as Lifetime Achievement, Best Narrative Feature, and Best Original Screenplay.

The retrospective is further enriched by post-screening discussions featuring prominent international film critics. Among the invited experts are Shelly Kraicer, director of Mercer Union’s modern art center Theresa Wang, Ryan Krahn from the cultural sector, and Yuetong Liu, curator of the Mulan International Film Festival. These discussions provide an opportunity for the audience to gain deeper insights into Yang’s work and its significance.

The retrospective exhibition “Edward Yang’s Taipei Stories” is being held at the TIFF Lightbox, located at 350 King St W, Toronto. For more information or to purchase tickets, please visit the official TIFF website.
