Elden Ring Movie Receives Major Endorsement from Video Game Director

FromSoftware president and Elden Ring director Hidetaka Miyazaki has expressed interest in a potential movie adaptation of the highly popular video game. Elden Ring, a fantasy RPG set in a world called The Lands Between, was crafted in collaboration with Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin.

Players in Elden Ring assume the role of one of the Tarnished, individuals whose ancestors were exiled years ago. Following the destruction of the Elden Ring, these characters have the chance to return and dominate The Lands Between.

When asked about a possible film adaptation, Miyazaki stated, “I don’t see any reason to deny another interpretation or adaptation of Elden Ring, a movie for example.” He further explained, “But I don’t think myself, or FromSoftware, have the knowledge or ability to produce something in a different medium. So that’s where a very strong partner would come into play. We’d have to build a lot of trust and agreement on whatever it is we’re trying to achieve, but there’s interest, for sure.”

Elden Ring was released in 2022, available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. It was published in Japan by FromSoftware and internationally by Bandai Namco Entertainment. Since its release, the game has garnered numerous Game of the Year awards, being hailed as one of the greatest games ever. With 25 million copies sold, Elden Ring stands among the best-selling games of all time. Its downloadable content, Shadow of the Erdtree, released in June 2021, received similar acclaim.

Miyazaki recently mentioned that he does not plan to produce a second DLC, although he hinted at the possibility of a sequel. Concurrently, George R.R. Martin teased rumors of either a movie or television series adaptation on his blog, sparking further speculation. In a cryptic post dated June 29, Martin wrote, “Oh, and about those rumors you may have heard about a feature film or television series based on ELDEN RING… I have nothing to say. Not a word, nope, not a thing, I know nothing, you never heard a peep from me, mum mum mum. What rumor?”

While the potential for a film or series adaptation remains uncertain, fans of Elden Ring are undoubtedly thrilled by the possibility. Enthusiasts of the game likely have their fan casts ready for characters such as the Goddess Marika, the Elden Lord, Maliketh, and Godwyn. The demigod children of Marika, who become corrupted and engage in a brutal conflict known as The Shattering, would also feature prominently. These characters inherit fragments of the Elden Ring called the Great Runes: Mohg, Radahn, Rykard, Ranni, and Miquella.

The narrative focuses on the Tarnished, who, granted immortality, are tasked with repairing the Elden Ring and becoming the new Elden Lord. This storyline would likely center around the player character for any potential adaptation.

Given the game’s intricate storyline and rich world-building, adapting Elden Ring would be no small feat. A live-action series or movie presents significant challenges, though an animated version might be more feasible. However, it remains to be seen whether any studios or streaming platforms will take on the challenge of bringing Elden Ring to the screen.
