Ellen DeGeneres to retire after upcoming Netflix special, two years post-show

Ellen DeGeneres has announced her decision to step away from show business following the release of her upcoming Netflix special.

The 66-year-old comedian took to the stage in Santa Rosa last week for her Ellen’s Last Stand… Up tour, marking her return to stand-up two years after her talk show was cancelled in the wake of a toxic workplace scandal.

During her performance, DeGeneres spoke candidly about her plans to exit the public eye, humorously suggesting she might be cancelled next for being “old, gay, and mean,” as reported by SFGate.

When asked if there was a possibility she might return to fame in the future, she definitively ruled out the option.

“This is the last time you’re going to see me. After my Netflix special, I’m done,” said Ellen, referencing her upcoming one-hour special set to tape this fall.

“Let me catch you up on what’s been going on with me since you last saw me,” Ellen told the audience. “I got chickens. Oh yeah, and I got kicked out of show business for being mean.”

She added, “I used to say, ‘I don’t care what people say about me.’ Now I realize I said that during the height of my popularity.”

The 34-time Emmy winner reminisced about the times she faced significant backlash, first for coming out as a lesbian in 1997 and more recently for being described as mean.

“Next time, I’ll be kicked out for being old. Old, gay, and mean, the triple crown,” she jokingly noted. Ellen affirmed she never intended to hurt anyone. “I can be demanding and impatient and tough. I am a strong woman. I am many things, but I am not mean,” she clarified.

DeGeneres, who is well known for voicing Dory in Pixar’s Finding Nemo (2003) and Finding Dory (2016), dismissed a fan’s plea for another appearance as the beloved fish. “No, I’m going bye-bye, remember?” she said.

In 2020, DeGeneres’ reputation took a hit following a viral tweet by comedian Kevin T. Porter that invited people to share their stories of Ellen being mean, resulting in over 2,600 replies. Four months later, BuzzFeed News published an exposé detailing allegations of racism, workplace bullying, and sexual harassment from 11 current and former employees of her daytime talk show.

An internal investigation by WarnerMedia soon followed, leading to Ellen issuing an apology to her 255 employees. Three executive producers of the show were fired as a result.

DeGeneres, who also apologized to her fans, aired the final episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show on May 26, 2022, concluding its run of 19 seasons. Since then, she has described the scandal as a “coordinated misogynistic” attack and has remained largely out of the spotlight.

Earlier this week, Ellen quietly canceled four scheduled shows in Dallas, San Francisco, Seattle, and Chicago as part of her 32-date comeback tour. This decision came just hours after a detailed review of her performance in Santa Rosa, CA, was published by SF Gate editor Gabe Lehman.

“Unfortunately, the Event Organizer has had to cancel your event,” Ticketmaster informed customers earlier this week. “You don’t need to do a thing. We’ll issue a refund to the original method of payment used at time of purchase, as soon as funds are received from the Event Organizer.

“It should appear on your account within 14-21 days. Please Note: If the tickets were transferred to you, the refund will go to the fan who originally purchased the tickets from Ticketmaster.”

Ellen is next scheduled to perform on Monday at the Paramount Theatre in Denver, CO. Her upcoming comedy special, her second for Netflix following 2018’s Relatable, is set to release later this year.
