Elon Musk Demands Impeachment of Brazilian Judge After X Ban

Elon Musk has made headlines by urging for the impeachment of a Brazilian judge who recently ordered the banning of his social media platform, X, in the country.

This action by Justice Alexandre de Moraes came after X did not appoint a new legal representative within a specified timeframe set by the court. The ruling has sparked significant controversy, with Musk fiercely defending the principle of free speech.

In a post on X, Musk described Judge Moraes as a “dictator” and accused him of undermining free speech, which he believes is essential to democracy. He stated, “He should be impeached for violating his oath of office.” Musk further emphasized that an unelected judge in Brazil should not be allowed to curtail free speech for political motives.

A Supreme Court panel consisting of five judges in Brazil is scheduled to vote on the ruling made by Judge Moraes; however, the ban on X has already taken effect. This decision was enacted over the weekend after the judge instructed the National Telecommunications Agency to implement a complete ban of the platform within a mere 24 hours.

According to the ruling, users of X who attempt to access the platform through a virtual private network (VPN) could face hefty fines amounting to 50,000 Reais, equivalent to approximately £6,750.

In addition to the platform’s ban, Musk faces potential legal challenges in Brazil. The judge has accused him of “obstruction of justice, criminal organization, and incitement to crime,” alleging that the platform was exploited by far-right accounts to disseminate misinformation and provoke attacks against government buildings following the electoral defeat of former president Jair Bolsonaro.

Judge Moraes directed X to appoint a legal representative in Brazil, a crucial market for the company. Linda Yaccarino, CEO of X, spoke out against the ruling, claiming that the threats made against the company’s legal representatives in Brazil included jail time. She lamented, “This is a sad day for X users around the world, especially those in Brazil, who are being denied access to our platform.” Yaccarino added that it was disheartening to see the situation escalate to such a critical point.
