Elon Musk Hosts Live Trump Interview on X, Aiming to Avoid DeSantis Meltdown

Ron DeSantis had a botched campaign launch hobbled with crashes on X in May 2023. On Sunday, Elon Musk said that he was running multiple “system scaling tests” ahead of his livestream with Donald Trump.

Elon Musk is leaving no stone unturned to ensure that his upcoming livestream interview with former President Donald Trump runs smoothly. On Sunday evening, Musk announced his plans to conduct “system scaling tests” on the X platform ahead of the highly anticipated event.

Musk emphasized the need for these tests based on previous technical difficulties the platform faced. Last year, X experienced significant disruptions during the launch of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ presidential campaign, which took place on the platform instead of traditional cable TV.

DeSantis’ campaign event was fraught with problems, as the livestream encountered multiple technical issues, leading to widespread ridicule. A spokesperson for Trump even labeled it a “complete failure,” commenting that it was riddled with “glitchy” moments and “uncomfortable silences.”

In preparation for his interview with Trump, Musk provided a preview of his test runs by livestreaming gaming sessions. The first stream lasted roughly 19 minutes, attracting 2.1 million views, while the second, which ran for about 46 minutes, garnered 1.3 million views, highlighting a significant level of engagement with users on the platform.

These early streams demonstrate Musk’s commitment to ensuring that the technical capabilities of X are reliable for Trump’s appearance. The platform’s inconsistent performance last year has undoubtedly created pressure for a more successful outcome this time around.

Trump’s willingness to participate in a livestream on X, despite previously choosing to stay away from the platform after being banned following the January 6 riots, reflects a notable shift. Even though Musk reinstated Trump’s account in November 2022, Trump has been largely absent from X, only making one post since then—sharing his mugshot in August with a link to his campaign website.

Interestingly, while Trump is open to appearing on X, he continues to prioritize his own social media platform, Truth Social. This platform has become his primary means of communication since his departure from X, and he tends to maintain a consistent presence there. However, Musk’s endorsement may have played a role in encouraging Trump to reconsider his engagement with X.

The relationship between Musk and Trump appears to be mutually beneficial, with Trump expressing admiration for Musk’s ventures. During a rally in Georgia, Trump mentioned how Musk’s endorsement had positively influenced his view on electric vehicles, stating, “I’m for electric cars… Elon endorsed me very strongly.” This acknowledgment underscores the influential role Musk plays within the tech and political spheres.

Musk and Trump’s partnership highlights a complex interplay where digital platforms become stages for political interaction. Despite the technical mishaps of the past, both figures seem determined to make the most of their collaboration on X.

As the date of the livestream approaches, individuals on both sides are eagerly anticipating its outcome. Whether Musk’s proactive measures will lead to a glitch-free event remains to be seen. However, the stakes appear high, especially given the scrutiny that will accompany the livestream.

The forthcoming interview promises to be a significant moment not only for Musk and Trump but for the X platform as well, as both sides hope to leverage this event to strengthen their positions in the public eye. Time will tell if Musk’s preparations pay off and if Trump can navigate the livestream without facing a repeat of DeSantis’ tumultuous campaign launch.
