LOS ANGELES–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Aug 15, 2024–

City of Hope®, one of the top cancer research and treatment organizations in the United States, has announced that Elton John will headline its Music, Film and Entertainment Industry (MFEI) volunteer and fundraising group’s Spirit of Life® Gala. The event is scheduled for October 22, 2024, at the historic Shrine Auditorium and Expo Hall in downtown Los Angeles.

The 51st annual Spirit of Life® Gala will honor Jay Marciano, chairman and CEO of AEG Presents, with City of Hope’s prestigious Spirit of Life® Award. Marciano will be recognized for his longstanding philanthropic efforts and contributions to humanitarian causes.

“I am honored to be receiving The Spirit of Life® Award from City of Hope and to be able to contribute to raising awareness and funds for their essential work in eradicating cancer and improving lives for many,” Marciano said. He expressed gratitude for Elton John’s agreement to perform, hoping that the superstar’s talent would inspire further support for the cause.

Marciano is widely recognized for his leadership in the live entertainment and music industry, heading one of the world’s largest live event companies. AEG Presents has recently produced major tours such as Taylor Swift’s “Eras Tour” and Elton John’s “Farewell Yellow Brick Road.”

Elton John’s historic final tour saw him perform 330 shows worldwide to over 6.25 million fans. The U.S. leg concluded with three sold-out shows at Dodger Stadium, which were also livestreamed on Disney+, marking a global first. He later headlined Glastonbury’s Pyramid Stage in June 2023.

“Jay is more than a colleague; he is a dear friend,” said Elton John. “It is my pleasure to lend my support to him as he receives the Spirit of Life honor, especially considering City of Hope’s exceptional care for cancer patients and their groundbreaking research on various life-threatening illnesses. Their work has enabled many to live beautiful, long lives, and I’m honored to be a part of their ongoing mission.”

City of Hope was founded over a century ago to provide high-quality, effective cancer treatment to those who had difficulty accessing it. Combining compassionate care with groundbreaking research, the organization continues to make significant strides in cancer treatment.

“Our longstanding supporters in the entertainment industry are helping us achieve our crucial goal of saving lives,” said Robert Stone, CEO of City of Hope. “Thank you, Jay, and all our partners for ensuring that everyone, regardless of background, has access to the most advanced cancer treatments available.”

In its 50-plus years, MFEI has raised over $150 million to support City of Hope’s research and care programs.

“The music industry has the power to unite millions for a cause, and in the case of cancer research, the impact is transformative,” said Kristin J. Bertell, chief philanthropy officer at City of Hope. “Jay’s support will boost awareness, raise essential funds, and inspire hope for millions affected by cancer.”

In addition to Elton John’s performance, guests will enjoy a curated menu by chef Evan Funke, an expert in handmade pasta, and a special act by magician and mentalist David Blaine. Comedian Fred Armisen will emcee the event, promising an evening filled with entertainment and inspiration.

“City of Hope’s Music, Film and Entertainment Industry division is enthusiastic about honoring Jay and celebrating his contributions to supporting cancer research through his significant influence within the live entertainment industry,” said Alissa Pollack, executive vice president of global music marketing for iHeartMedia and MFEI board president. “It’s inspiring to see the music industry unite for the common cause of fighting cancer.”

“City of Hope’s MFEI Board is incredibly grateful to Jay Marciano and his team for their efforts to combat these devastating diseases,” said Evan Lamberg, president of Universal Music Publishing Group, North America, and MFEI Board Chairman. “There’s hardly anyone who hasn’t been touched by cancer in some way. City of Hope continues its tireless battle against cancer, aiming to improve the quality of life for many.”

The Spirit of Life® Gala will conclude a year-long fundraising initiative, including auctions and a dinner series to benefit City of Hope. Attendees can purchase tickets, support the event, or find out more ways to contribute by contacting [email protected].
