Emmy Predictions: Richard Gadd (Baby Reindeer) for Best Actor

Richard Gadd went into the Emmy nominations ranked second in the odds for Best Movie/Limited Actor for his compelling portrayal of a man grappling with trauma and the relentless obsession of a stalker in “Baby Reindeer.” Since the nominations were announced on July 17, he has surged ahead according to the combined predictions of Gold Derby users, making him a strong contender for not just one, but three awards on September 15.

Previously, Jon Hamm, who starred in “Fargo” as a corrupt sheriff, was the frontrunner in this category. However, Hamm has now slipped to third place. This might be due to “Fargo”’s underperformance in the acting categories, securing only three nominations and notably missing expected supporting nominees Jennifer Jason Leigh and Joe Keery. As of now, Gadd has the backing of six out of nine Expert journalists surveyed from major media outlets. Additionally, seven out of ten Gold Derby Editors who cover awards extensively have also predicted his win. Among the Top 24 Users who achieved the highest scores predicting last year’s Emmy winners, 19 believe Gadd will emerge victorious. This support is mirrored by another 19 from the All-Star Top 24, who achieved the best scores over the last two years combined.

However, the optimism surrounding Gadd doesn’t end with his acting nomination. “Baby Reindeer” is also leading the race for Best Limited Series. A win in this category would earn Gadd an additional trophy as a producer. Furthermore, he wrote the entire series, positioning him as the heavy favorite for Best Movie/Limited Writing. Achieving victories in acting, producing, and writing would mirror the trifecta of awards that Phoebe Waller-Bridge won with “Fleabag” in 2019, suggesting history might repeat itself if the predictions hold true.
