Emmys Hosts Eugene and Dan Levy Deliver Gentle Mockery in Opening Monologue

Hosts Eugene and Dan Levy fulfilled their commitment to infuse a more compassionate comedic style into the 2024 Emmy Awards.

The father-son duo, known for their work on Schitt’s Creek, kicked off the ceremony with a heartfelt opening monologue. They offered light-hearted jabs at themselves, the Emmy Awards, and several nominated shows without targeting any individual guests for ridicule.

Among the memorable moments, Dan Levy humorously remarked, “The Emmys, also known as broadcast TV’s biggest night for honoring movie stars on streaming services.”

He continued, acknowledging the achievements of Shogun, stating, “The Creative Arts Emmys were held last weekend, and the Shogun team took home 14 Emmys, making it the most-decorated show in a single season, and deservedly so.” He praised the show’s meticulous attention to detail, quipping about how the script was translated into Japanese and then back into English subtitles, which viewers likely missed while distracted by other content.

Eugene Levy, on the other hand, highlighted The Bear’s impressive nomination count, saying, “The Bear is nominated for 23 Emmys tonight, the most-nominated comedy in history.” He expressed his affection for the show, emphasizing, “Now, I love the show. I love the show. And I know some of you might be expecting us to make a joke about whether The Bear is really a comedy. In the true spirit of The Bear, we will not be making any jokes.”

He also expressed pride in AppleTV+ for its support of the LGBTQ community. However, Dan quickly interjected humorously, “That’s not what the plus stands for.”

In a witty exchange, Dan Levy joked, “If things go well tonight, my name is pronounced ‘Leh-vy’, not ‘Lee-vy.’” Eugene responded, “And if things go south, my name is pronounced Martin Short.”

Highlighting a piece of Emmy history, Eugene noted, “The very first Emmys’ host in 1949 was Walter O’Keefe.” Dan added, “That’s true, and tonight we are making Emmy history as the first father-son pair to mention Walter O’Keefe since 1949.”

The Levys expressed their desire for a gentler approach to hosting this prestigious event. The awards ceremony was broadcast live from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on ABC.

Eugene Levy reflected on their hosting approach, stating, “Just paying tribute to television, certainly the nominees, but to the medium that gave us both our starts.” He stressed the importance of recognizing the nominees’ hard work on their special night, saying, “It’s always hit me in a funny way when jokes are done at the expense of people who are nominated — they’ve put in the work, and it’s their night, really, and you have to have enough respect for the awards show itself. Otherwise, why are we here?”

The 76th annual Primetime Emmy Awards was an evening filled with recognition and celebration of television excellence. It’s noteworthy that the award winners revealed their talent and creativity through a diverse range of performances throughout the year.
