Endless Banter

King Charles and Queen Camilla may appear to be a happy couple since their marriage in 2005, but like most couples, they reportedly have their differences, too.

Queen Camilla’s sister Annabel Elliot has confirmed that things aren’t always perfect for the royal couple behind closed doors. Despite being “polar opposites,” their disagreements are described as light-hearted and don’t seem to affect their marriage negatively.

One recurring issue in their marriage was highlighted in Robert Hardman’s book King Charles: New King. New Court. The Inside Story. According to Elliot, King Charles and Queen Camilla often argue about whether to keep the window open.

“There’s a constant battle about it. He will have opened it. She will creep in behind and shut it,” Elliot said, according to Hardman’s book. “So there’s a lot of: ‘Oh, darling, you shut the window,’ ‘Yes, I have, because we’re all freezing.’ So a lot of banter goes on.”

Elliot noted that while King Charles usually wins when it comes to keeping the windows open, the Queen Consort “wins most other things.”

King Charles’ former Communications Secretary Julian Payne, who spent five years working for him and Queen Camilla, has also spoken about the King’s fondness for fresh air, regardless of the weather.

“The King dislikes being inside for too long and always has the windows wide open. A meeting at Birkhall, his home in the Highlands, in the middle of winter was not for the faint-hearted,” Payne joked. “I can remember more than one occasion when I thought I might have actually got frostbite while trying to write with a hand I could no longer feel.”
