Eva Amurri defends Olivia Culpo’s modest wedding dress amid controversy

Eva Amurri is standing up for Olivia Culpo amidst online criticism regarding their wedding gowns. After both celebrities faced backlash for their chosen styles, Amurri shared her thoughts on her blog, explaining why she believes women are unfairly judged regardless of how they choose to dress.

Susan Sarandon’s daughter, 39, reflected on the harsh comments she received for the strapless gown she wore when marrying chef Ian Hock in June. The dress, which showcased cleavage, sparked some cruel comments online, which Amurri admitted brought tears to her eyes. She felt transported back to middle school, with people seemingly aiming to bring her nothing but shame. For a moment, it worked.

However, Amurri soon rose above the “unsettling … aggression from strangers,” especially after noticing similar criticism directed at Olivia Culpo’s “modest” wedding dress. Culpo, who married NFL player Christian McCaffrey in Rhode Island on the same day that Amurri tied the knot in Connecticut, found herself the target of online trolls. Despite her intention to avoid a sexy look, Culpo’s dress was likened to a “nun” and a “milkmaid.”

Amurri praised Culpo’s confidence, expressing admiration for how she stepped into a new life chapter on her own terms. Amurri pondered what society has come to when women cannot be either “sexy elegant” or “modestly elegant” while walking down the aisle. She noted that two women married on the same day, dressed vastly differently, but neither was considered “right” or “good enough,” a tale as old as time.

Previously, Amurri defended her choice of a bustier-style gown by Kim Kassas Couture, using an Instagram Story meme to highlight her 32F breasts minding their own business. As for Culpo, she faced her critics head-on, calling one of them a “bizarre human” for attacking her Dolce & Gabbana dress and even her makeup. McCaffrey also came to his wife’s defense when an influencer described Culpo’s dress as lacking “personality.”

The controversy surrounding wedding dresses is not unique to Amurri and Culpo. Natalie Joy, partner to former Bachelor Nick Viall, also faced criticism for her custom, cleavage-baring wedding dress in April. Joy defended her choice in an Instagram Story, explaining that her breasts had grown due to breastfeeding her daughter, River. She found it ridiculous that people made her feel uncomfortable when her friends and family did not.

Summing up her thoughts, Amurri concluded her blog post stating, “It is impossible to be a woman.” The ongoing criticism women face for their wedding dress choices highlights a broader issue about societal expectations and the double standards women navigate.
