Everyone’s Here to Have Fun

The trailer for Netflix’s “Squid Game: Unleashed,” a multiplayer video game, was unveiled at the gamescom video game convention on Tuesday.

According to Netflix’s official description: “Prepare for fast, heart-pounding action and brutal competition in this multiplayer battle royale game. Play with friends (or enemies) online and see if you have what it takes to outlast and defeat the other Players in each twisted Contest. With deadly challenges you’ll recognize from ‘Squid Game,’ the series, and more new games inspired by classic childhood activities, each round is a dark trip down memory lane. Can you make it through playtime alive?”

The video game is slated to be released in conjunction with the launch of “Squid Game” Season 2, which premieres on Netflix on December 26. However, the exact release date for the game has not been announced yet.

Also showcased by Netflix during gamescom was “Monument Valley 3,” a new game launching exclusively on the streaming platform on December 10. The first new title in the beloved franchise in over a decade promises to let players “set sail in the beautiful universe that captured the imagination of millions and set a new standard for artistic and innovative mobile gaming,” per Netflix.

Back in December, Netflix first hinted at “Squid Game” video game with a brief description that players would be able to “compete with other players in games from the hit series.”

Over the last few years, Netflix has significantly expanded its gaming division. To date, the company has released over 100 games, including the critically acclaimed “Oxenfree II: Lost Signals,” “Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy,” and games based on popular Netflix shows like “Emily in Paris,” “Too Hot to Handle,” “Virgin River,” and “Money Heist.” Currently, Netflix has more than 80 games in development, including a “Selling Sunset” mobile game.

Further cementing its commitment to gaming, Netflix recently hired Alain Tascan from Epic Games as its new head of games. They also began testing games on TVs and computers in several countries as part of a broader strategy to make their games accessible on all devices. During the company’s Q2 earnings call in July, Netflix executives committed to launching one new video game every month moving forward.
