The recent launch of the iPhone 16 has sparked conversations about its compatibility with Apple Intelligence, raising questions about when the new AI features will become available. Apple has marketed the iPhone 16 as a device designed specifically for artificial intelligence, and while it became available last Friday, users will have to wait for the Apple Intelligence rollout on iOS 18, which is expected to begin in October, initially in beta.

The initial beta version will only introduce a limited selection of AI features. Many of the enhancements highlighted during the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June will not be accessible until 2025. Apple has been vague about the exact timeline for the rollout, noting on its site that certain features will be available “over the course of the next year.”

Based on expert commentary since WWDC, here’s a rough timeline for the release of Apple Intelligence in the US English context. Starting in October, the beta testing phase will begin, making this initial update a test for iPhone users who may experience performance issues or security vulnerabilities. However, the excitement surrounding AI could motivate many iPhone 16 users to try out the new features.

According to reports, the first batch of enhancements, as detailed by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, will include updates to existing applications and introduce new functionalities:

  • More extensive reply suggestions within the Messages app.
  • A prioritized section within the Mail app to categorize important messages.
  • A new feature called Reduce Interruptions Focus mode, which allows alerts from messages deemed urgent while muting others.
  • Summaries of emails and texts in notifications.
  • Tools for writing, which include features to help with summarizing, proofreading, and editing text.
  • A redesigned interface for Siri that will feature a glowing screen perimeter, along with a “Type to Siri” option.
  • Concise web page summaries in Reader Mode on Safari.

As the months progress, more captivating features may be on the way. Expected updates in November and December might include:

  • Genmojis, which use AI to personalize emojis through user-uploaded photos.
  • An Image Playground app for generating AI-created images.
  • Integration of OpenAI’s ChatGPT for eligible iPhones.

Anticipated upgrades to Siri and further language support are earmarked for 2025 and beyond. Apple has been promoting a more intuitive Siri in its materials, but this updated version is likely to debut six months later than expected. In a promotional video featuring actress Bella Ramsey, the enhanced Siri successfully recalls a name from months ago, showcasing its anticipated capabilities; however, this feature won’t be available on iPhone 15s or 16s until 2025.

Initially, Apple Intelligence will be accessible in American English, before rapidly expanding to other English-speaking regions, including Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, Australia, and the UK by December. Apple has also announced plans for further language support, promising to roll out additional languages over the following year. These include Indian English, Singaporean English, Chinese, Japanese, French, German, Italian, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish, and Vietnamese, among others.

With a future focused on enhanced AI capabilities, Apple seems committed to evolving the iPhone experience, aligning it with user needs and technological advancements.
