Explaining the AI Cat and Billie Eilish TikTok Trend

Billie Eilish has several songs that are popular on TikTok, but a new trend has given her Oscar-winning hit “What Was I Made For?” a unique, feline twist.

Thanks to the power of AI, a new version of the track features not Eilish’s vocals but rather melancholy cats meowing to the ballad. Accompanying the audio are AI-generated images of cats, amplifying the theme. So far, this trend has sparked the creation of over 942,000 videos on the platform.

Many of these AI-generated cat images show furry friends in adorable outfits, drawing inspiration from famous cartoon cats like Garfield. This catchy trend isn’t limited to just one song; other hits like Rihanna’s “Diamonds” and Sia’s “Unstoppable” have also received the meow remix treatment.

One of the catalyst videos for this trend was created by the TikTok account mpwild. Known for similar AI cat videos, mpwild’s content has garnered millions of views. In one particularly viral video, a sad ginger cat is shown being bullied by white cats at school, leading it to try and change its fur color to fit in.

Viewers in the comment section shared how deeply the video resonated with them emotionally. One remarked, “Bro, why does this actually make me wanna cry, HELP.” Another noted, “The meow meoww…meowww… part is just the saddest part.” Someone else confessed, “Can’t let the gang know I cried to these.” A fourth person simply stated, “This got me sobbing.”
