Fact-Checking Donald Trump’s Press Conference in New Jersey

Former President Donald Trump held a press conference on Thursday at his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey. This event marked the second time he addressed reporters this week, underlining his commitment to re-engaging with the media and the public as he campaigns for the 2024 election.

During the nearly hour-long session, Trump discussed matters related to the economy and immigration policy, directing blame towards the Biden administration and specifically targeting Vice President Kamala Harris, his likely opponent in the upcoming election. He also criticized Harris’ running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, furthering his attempt to draw contrasts between their policies and his own administration’s achievements.

While Trump engaged with reporters, his statements included a mix of factual assertions and exaggerations that merit further examination. Several of his claims were fact-checked, shedding light on their accuracy and providing a clearer understanding of the issues he raised.

One major claim involved mortgage rates. Trump stated, “The cost of a typical monthly mortgage has doubled since I left office. We had mortgage rates at around 2%, and they’re now at 10%, and you can’t get a mortgage.”

This assertion was partly accurate. During his presidency, 30-year fixed mortgage rates were about 2.6%. It’s true that rates have increased since he left office, indeed doubling their earlier figures. However, the claim that current rates stand at 10% is misleading. Recent reports show that mortgage rates have dropped to 6.49%, the lowest in over a year according to Freddie Mac.

In another bold statement, Trump alleged that Governor Walz approved a Minnesota bill that mandates tampons to be placed in boys’ bathrooms in public schools. He remarked, “He approved a bill recently for tampons in boys’ bathrooms. He wants tampons in boys’ bathrooms. It’s terrible.”

This claim is somewhat misleading as well. In 2023, Walz did sign legislation that requires public schools to provide access to menstrual products in bathrooms frequently used by students in grades 4 through 12. The law does not specify gender differentiation; it mandates that these products be available for “all menstruating students,” thus allowing individual schools the discretion to decide where these products should be placed.

Immigration policy was another focus of Trump’s comments. He stated that Harris had allowed more than “20 million” people into the United States, a claim that lacks support. According to U.S. Customs and Border Patrol, the actual number of immigration encounters during the Biden administration stands at approximately 9.9 million. When factoring in individuals who manage to cross the border without being apprehended, the estimate rises to around 11.6 million as per the Department of Homeland Security.

As Trump continues to voice his opinions and campaign for a return to the presidency, his statements are drawing increased scrutiny. The forthcoming election will likely see further debates over the accuracy of claims made by candidates as they vie for voter support.

The press conference highlighted not only Trump’s focus on challenging the current administration’s policies but also the contentious nature of political discourse that elucidates broader themes in American politics as the nation gears up for the 2024 election.

As the political landscape evolves, the importance of fact-checking and holding leaders accountable remains critical for voters seeking to make informed decisions on the issues that affect their lives.
