Fake Rumor of Beyonce at DNC Devastates Internet, Spectators Unfazed

Representative Abigail Spanberger of Virginia was unsure about the perfect song for Beyoncé to perform before Vice President Kamala Harris delivered her speech accepting the Democratic nomination for president. However, she had definite ideas about what not to choose.

“Choosing the new ‘Cowboy Carter’ song celebrating Texas might stir some state-related controversies,” Spanberger, a candidate for governor, mentioned while topping condiments on her hot dog at the United Center. She referred to the song “Texas Hold ‘Em.”

As the fourth night of the Democratic National Convention progressed, the United Center in Chicago went on lockdown, fueling speculation. Many delegates on the floor adopted the cowboy theme, dressed in stetsons and red-white-and-blue sashes inspired by Beyoncé’s latest country album cover.

When The Chicks, once collaborators with Beyoncé on “Daddy Lessons” from her “Lemonade” album, performed the “Star-Spangled Banner,” it seemed like a hint that Beyoncé might have made an appearance in Chicago. Despite previously raising funds for Barack Obama’s 2012 re-election campaign and performing at his inaugural, Beyoncé had never attended a convention.

The rumors existed in the larger context of the Harris-Knowles relationship. The singer, originally from Houston, Texas, has openly shown her support for Harris. She even gifted tickets to Harris and her husband, Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff, for her Renaissance Tour in 2023, worth $1,655.92.

Beyoncé’s song “Freedom” has served as the Harris campaign’s theme song, with the Vice President making her stage appearances at the DNC to this tune on both Monday and Thursday.

An X user quipped, “The DNC started that Beyoncé rumor and you can’t tell me otherwise.”

However, as the night continued, Beyoncé—Jay-Z’s wife and Blue Ivy Carter’s mother—did not appear.

“I heard it was going to be Taylor Swift,” said Andrea Yagoda from Ohio, unfazed as she sat on the third story of the arena.

Then, Harris took the stage, yet still no Beyoncé. This lack of celebrity presence didn’t stem from a lack of trying. Steph Curry, a player for Harris’s favorite team the Golden State Warriors, made a video appearance. Steve Kerr, legendary Chicago Bulls player and Curry’s coach for the Warriors and the U.S. men’s basketball team for the Olympics, also spoke on the first night.

Kerry Washington, the star of “Scandal,” emceed most of the fourth night while Mindy Kaling hosted part of the third night.

Some attendees could be heard complaining after Harris’s speech that the singer did not show up.

However, Democrats appeared unburdened by the miscommunication. “A little bit more excited that Kamala accepted the nomination,” expressed Yolanda Washington from Washington, D.C.

Similarly, Idalia Maya from Texas was positive about the situation. “It’s okay. Who knows why she didn’t show up, but we use her music and we’re anticipating her coming to the inaugural ball,” she shared. Maya also expressed hope that not only would Beyoncé campaign for Harris in Texas, but that Latino artists would also join in.

As Democrats and delegates exited the arena, one man could be overheard grumbling that Beyoncé did not make an appearance.
