Fandango Sales Boards Venice’s ‘Bestiari, Erbari, Lapidari’; Teaser Debuts

Fandango Sales has joined forces with the essay documentary “Bestiari, Erbari, Lapidari,” which is featured in the out-of-competition section of the Venice Film Festival. Written and directed by Massimo D’Anolfi and Martina Parenti, the film has unveiled its teaser.

“Bestiari, Erbari, Lapidari” is described as a reflection on the relationship between humans and nature that extends beyond our impact on it. The film is divided into three acts, focusing on animals, plants, and stones, respectively.

“Our film is a tribute to the ‘unknown’ and in some ways alien world of animals, plants, and stones, which we too often take for granted, but with which we should actually be in constant dialogue since it constitutes the essential part of our existence on Planet Earth,” according to a statement from the filmmakers.

The acts are closely interconnected because they create a unique dramaturgical development through three different staging devices.

Each act of the film serves as a tribute to a specific genre of documentary cinema. “Bestiaries” is based on found footage and explores how and why cinema has obsessively represented animals. “Herbaria” is an observational documentary, filmed inside the Botanical Garden of Padua. “Lapidaries” is an industrial and emotional film that captures the transformation of stone into collective memory.

The producers of the film are D’Anolfi, Parenti, David Fonjallaz, and Louis Mataré.

“Bestiari, Erbari, Lapidari” is produced by Montmorency Film with Rai Cinema, and Lomotion with SRF Schweizer Radio Und Fernsehen/SRG SSR. Luce Cinecittà handles the Italian distribution.

D’Anolfi and Parenti have a long history of collaboration on various film projects. In 2006, they wrote and directed “I promessi sposi” (The Betrothed), which was selected for the Locarno Film Festival. In 2009, “Grandi speranze” (Great Expectations) was also showcased at Locarno. Their 2011 film “Il Castello” (The Castle) received awards at Hot Docs and Toronto.

In 2013, their film “Materia oscura” (Dark Matter) was presented in the Forum section of the Berlinale. In 2015, “L’Infinita Fabbrica del Duomo” (The Never-ending Factory of the Duomo) premiered at Locarno. The duo’s 2016 film “Spira Mirabilis” competed at Venice, while “Blu” premiered at Venice in 2018. Their 2020 film “Guerra e pace” premiered in the Horizons section at Venice. In 2022, “Una giornata nell’Archivio Piero Bottoni” premiered at the Torino Film Festival.
