FBI Says Former Aide to NY Gov. Kathy Hochul Arrested

NEW YORK – This morning, the FBI arrested a former aide to New York Governors Kathy Hochul and Andrew Cuomo. Linda Sun, who previously served as a deputy chief of staff, was taken into custody alongside her husband, Chris Hu.

The arrests occurred at their multimillion-dollar residence in Manhasset, Long Island. Both individuals face charges concerning violations of the Foreign Agents Registration Act. This law mandates that individuals involved in advocacy for a foreign government—specifically, in this case, China—must register with the Justice Department.

About six weeks prior, FBI agents had executed a pre-dawn raid on their $3.5 million Long Island property. At that time, the specifics of the investigation remained unclear. The raid drew significant attention due to Sun’s prominent role in state government, where she served under Cuomo since 2012 and later as Hochul’s deputy chief of staff.

U.S. Attorney Breon Peace stated, “As alleged, while appearing to serve the people of New York as deputy chief of staff within the New York State executive chamber, the defendant and her husband actually worked to further the interests of the Chinese government and the CCP. The illicit scheme enriched the defendant’s family to the tune of millions of dollars. Our office will act decisively to prosecute those who serve as undisclosed agents of a foreign government.”

After discovering evidence of misconduct, Governor Hochul’s administration terminated Sun’s employment in March 2023. Hochul’s Press Secretary, Avi Small, remarked, “We terminated her employment after discovering evidence of misconduct, immediately reported her actions to law enforcement, and have assisted law enforcement throughout this process.”

Allegations against Sun reportedly include forgery. Sources reveal that she may have forged Hochul’s name on a letter intended for the Chinese government. Additionally, it is alleged that she attempted to assist a Chinese company in obtaining a pandemic-related contract while working under Cuomo.

The investigation led by the U.S. Attorney in Brooklyn extends beyond Sun. There are concerns over potential Chinese government influence in city and state operations. Earlier amid this unfolding investigation, the FBI also conducted raids at the Bronx addresses linked to Winnie Greco, who serves as the director of Asian affairs in Mayor Eric Adams’ administration.

Moreover, inquiries have allegedly centered on the New World Mall located on Roosevelt Avenue in Queens. This site has been associated with various fundraising events for Mayor Adams’ 2021 electoral campaign.

When asked about the ongoing probes, Adams maintained his focus on his responsibilities as mayor. He stated, “Whenever there is an inquiry, the review must be done. That’s the process. My job is to stay focused on running the city. I’m not going to remove trash off the streets and keep the city safe from violence if I’m distracted.”

The arrests and subsequent investigations bring to light serious allegations regarding the intertwining of state governance and foreign interests. The developments are likely to stir considerable public attention as the legal proceedings unfold.

As this situation progresses, it is expected that further details will emerge concerning the extent of alleged foreign influence and the implications for state governance in New York.
