Feeling Good About My Positive Attitude

Rick Steves, a well-known travel writer celebrated for his guidebooks, TV shows, and radio programs, has announced that he has been diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Steves shared the news on social media, revealing that medical scans showed the cancer has not spread, and expressing optimism that there is a clear path to recovery. “There is a clear path forward to getting healthy,” he stated confidently.

Despite the diagnosis, Steves is determined to complete his current commitments. He plans to finish filming two new TV shows in France this month before returning home to Washington state for surgery.

“I’ll likely get my surgery in late September, be laid up for a month, and — God willing — be cancer-free and back at it by the end of October,” the 69-year-old travel guru wrote. He added he has immense faith in his medical team at Seattle’s Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center and is grateful for the support of friends, family, and his own strong faith.

Steves, who has never spent a night in a hospital, is approaching his upcoming surgery with the mindset of an important trip. He described himself as feeling positive and listed several intangible “souvenirs” he hopes to gain from this experience, such as appreciating life’s little moments, the goodness in people, and the marvels of modern medicine.

He spoke warmly of the “army of amazing, smart, and dedicated people” making his treatment possible and emphasized his gratitude for life, health, and the world around him. He ended his message on a hopeful note, looking forward to many more years of travel, collaboration, and fellowship.

Rick Steves’ contributions to travel literature and media are well-recognized. Since 2000, he has hosted the TV series “Rick Steves’ Europe” and has been the voice behind the radio show and podcast “Travel with Rick Steves.”
