First Look at Young Leroy Jethro Gibbs and Mike Franks — Plus Set Tour

Now 10 weeks out from the double-episode series premiere of CBS’ NCIS: Origins, fans are getting an exclusive first look at two key characters — Leroy Jethro Gibbs and Special Agent Mike Franks — in the NCIS prequel spinoff.

Set in 1991, NCIS: Origins follows a young Gibbs (played by Austin Stowell), a new agent at the NIS Camp Pendleton office, as he starts his career under the legendary Mike Franks (Kyle Schmid).

Though longtime NCIS fans may believe they know all about Jethro’s younger days, David J. North, co-showrunner on Origins with Gina Lucita Monreal, says, “They don’t know as much as they think they do.” He adds, “Seeing Gibbs arrive at NIS on Day 1, and seeing how Gibbs became Gibbs…? You will realize there’s so much to explore.”

Monreal highlights that audiences have not seen the dynamic between “probie” Gibbs and Mike Franks. Played on the original NCIS by Mark Harmon and Muse Watson, this fresh-out-of-the-Marines Gibbs brings a new kind of shading to the character.

North further comments, “The way he looks at Franks, you can see that bit of awe in his eyes.”

The series regular cast of NCIS: Origins also includes Mariel Molino as Special Agent Lala Dominguez, a former Marine with a dark sense of humor whose dynamic with Gibbs is “filled with sparks”; Diany Rodriguez as Special Agent Vera Strickland, a tough and sharp-witted Brooklynite; Tyla Abercrumbie as Field Operation Support Officer Mary Jo Hayes, a “mama bear” with the self-assigned title “HSIC” — Head Secretary in Charge; and Caleb Martin Foote as Special Agent Benjamin “Randy” Randolf, the agency’s lovable “golden boy” tasked with showing Gibbs the ropes.

Mark Harmon, who starred as Gibbs in the original NCIS series through early Season 19, will not appear in NCIS: Origins, but he will lend his voice as the series’ narrator and serve as an executive producer. Sean Harmon, who portrayed Young Gibbs in NCIS flashbacks and conceived the idea for the prequel series, will also serve as an executive producer.
