Fifteen years after Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman first portrayed Deadpool and Wolverine in the ill-fated X-Men: Origins — Wolverine, the duo returns to give the characters a proper buddy movie.

Reynolds and Jackman premiered their movie in New York on Monday. Press across the country were also treated to the first full screenings. Early social media reactions are already rolling in, just before official critics’ reviews hit on Tuesday.

The movie is tracking for a massive $165 million-plus domestic debut this weekend, potentially marking the biggest R-rated opening ever.

Frequent Reynolds collaborator Shawn Levy directs Deadpool & Wolverine, with a script penned by Reynolds, Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, and Zeb Wells. Emma Corrin stars as the film’s antagonist. Familiar faces from the Deadpool and Wolverine franchises also make appearances, including Dafne Keen, who played Wolverine’s daughter, Laura, in Logan (2017).

The road to this film’s release has been long and winding. 20th Century Fox’s Deadpool turned out to be a surprise hit in 2016, boosting Reynolds and the character’s popularity. A sequel, Deadpool 2, followed two years later. However, the third installment took six years to hit the screen due to complications from 20th Century Fox’s sale to Disney. This acquisition granted Marvel Studios access to the Deadpool and X-Men characters, also marking Marvel’s first R-rated film.

The premiere precedes Thursday’s San Diego Comic-Con panel for the film, along with Marvel’s Saturday evening panel. Future movies like Captain America: Brave New World and Thunderbolts are expected to be discussed.
