First Reactions Praise Glen Powell-Led Summer Blockbuster “Twisters”

Twisters looks set to be a major hit, with early reactions from critics praising Lee Isaac Chung’s new film starring Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones. The movie is shaping up to be the summer blockbuster that audiences have been eagerly awaiting.

The European premiere of Twisters took place on July 8 in London, England. The event saw the presence of stars Powell, Edgar-Jones, and Anthony Ramos. Even Powell’s Top Gun: Maverick co-star Tom Cruise made an appearance.

Early reactions have generally been positive. Manuel São Bento describes the film as meeting the expectations of the disaster subgenre. “It fulfills its sole, valid purpose of entertaining its target audience while reminding us of the importance of humanity and altruism in times of crisis,” reads their reaction.

Scott J. Davis was equally enthusiastic, calling Twisters “one of” their favorite movies of the year. “Thrilling and exciting in all the best ways — and tonnes of fun — as well as fab turns from Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell, it’s gonna blow the theatrical roof off!” they praised.

Despite being a blockbuster, Twisters is “beautifully shot” and boasts a “heartfelt story,” according to Jon Brown. He noted, “It is both a compelling drama and a rip roaring adventure with dynamic performances from Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell that is sure to go down a storm!”

Ian Sandwell from Digital Spy pointed out that while the story of Twisters “leaves something to be desired,” it “delivers where it matters with huge-scale thrilling set pieces.” Sandwell praised Edgar-Jones and Powell as the leads but highlighted Brandon Perea as the scene-stealer.

In Twisters, Daisy Edgar-Jones plays Kate Cooper, a former storm-chaser who leaves the profession after a devastating tornado encounter. She’s later drawn back to test a new tracking system. During her return, she meets Tyler Owens, played by Glen Powell, a hot-shot social media influencer who documents his storm-chasing adventures online. This approach conflicts with Kate’s more traditional methods, but they have to collaborate when a massive storm intensifies.

The movie is directed by Lee Isaac Chung and based on a script by Mark L. Smith. The story was developed by Joseph Kosinski, the director of Top Gun: Maverick.

Chung is renowned for directing Minari, which earned six Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director. Minari is a semi-autobiographical film about Chung’s upbringing as a part of a South Korean family that moves to rural Arkansas in the ’80s. Additionally, Chung has directed an episode of The Mandalorian and will return to the Star Wars franchise by directing multiple episodes of Skelton Crew.

The cast of Twisters includes not only Edgar-Jones and Powell, but also Anthony Ramos (In the Heights), Brandon Perea (Nope), Maura Tierney (The Iron Claw), and David Corenswet (Superman). Other cast members include Daryl McCormack, Sasha Lane, Harry Hadden-Paton, and Tunde Adebimpe.

Daisy Edgar-Jones first gained recognition for her roles in TV series like Cold Feet, War of the Worlds, and Normal People. She has also starred in movies such as Fresh and Where the Crawdads Sing. In 2022, she appeared in Under the Banner of Heaven alongside Andrew Garfield.

Glen Powell has become increasingly popular in recent years. Following his acclaim in Top Gun: Maverick, Powell starred in the rom-com Anyone But You with Sydney Sweeney and in Hit Man, a movie he co-wrote with Richard Linklater.

Twisters is set for release on July 19.
