Florida to Start QB DJ Lagway vs. Samford with Graham Mertz Injured

Florida is preparing to face Samford on Saturday night without starting quarterback Graham Mertz, who is sidelined due to a concussion. This situation sets the stage for highly regarded freshman DJ Lagway to make his debut as a starting quarterback.

Mertz suffered the concussion during the Gators’ recent 41-17 defeat to No. 19 Miami, which forced him to exit the game in the third quarter. Head Coach Billy Napier indicated that Mertz missed his third consecutive practice on Wednesday, leading to the likelihood that he will not be cleared to play against the Bulldogs.

“He’s doing better, but he’s not quite there yet,” Napier shared regarding Mertz’s progress. “So as of now, DJ will start the game.”

The former Wisconsin starter had a challenging outing, finishing with only 91 passing yards, completing 11 of 20 attempts, and throwing an interception in his latest performance with the Gators.

During the game against Miami, Lagway took over for Mertz for three series, leading the Gators to one touchdown while also throwing an interception. He showed versatility by rushing for an additional 20 yards. With the chance to start, Lagway will have the opportunity to receive valuable playing time and potentially secure a more prominent role moving forward this season.

“I want to see clean football,” stated Napier. “I want to see him lead the team, execute our offense, be the point guard, distribute the ball, take what the defense gives you, throw completions, create explosives when presented opportunities, be a great communicator, respond to success and adversity throughout the game, and ultimately prepare in a way that reflects the vision for what you want to accomplish on Saturday.”

Napier also mentioned Lagway’s performance in practice, remarking, “He was sharp today.”

Lagway entered the program as a five-star recruit hailing from Willis, Texas. He earned the title of the 2023 Gatorade Player of the Year and was recognized as the consensus top quarterback in the nation. In his senior year at Willis High School, he accomplished impressive statistics, throwing for 4,604 yards and 58 touchdowns. Additionally, he excelled as a rusher, leading his team with 957 yards and 16 rushing touchdowns.

“He’s got a good look in his eye,” Napier commented, highlighting Lagway’s readiness for the challenge ahead.

Along with Mertz’s absence, the Gators will also miss four defensive starters in the upcoming game. Defensive tackle Joey Slackman, safety Asa Turner, cornerback Devin Moore, and nickel cornerback Sharif Denson will all be sidelined as Florida prepares to take on Samford.

The upcoming game presents a critical opportunity for Lagway to step up and showcase his skills on the field. As he prepares for his first start, fans and analysts alike will be keen to see how the freshman quarterback handles the pressure and leads Florida in this matchup.
