Former Clemson WR, a two-time national champion, has passed away

Diondre Overton, a former wide receiver for Clemson University, tragically passed away at the age of 26, as announced by the school on Saturday. Overton made significant contributions to the Tigers’ football program during his college career, playing from 2016 to 2019 and being part of two national championship-winning teams.

Overton arrived at Clemson as a highly regarded four-star recruit in the 2016 signing class. Over his four years with the team, he participated in 51 games, showcasing his skills by making 52 receptions for a total of 777 yards and scoring seven touchdowns.

During the Tigers’ memorable 2018 national championship season, Overton played a crucial role in significant games, including a pivotal touchdown in the third quarter against Texas A&M.

The Clemson football community expressed its sorrow through social media, stating, “Clemson Football and the entire Clemson Family mourns the passing of Clemson alumnus Diondre Overton. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.”

Overton’s teammates from Clemson, including Amari Rodgers and Tee Higgins, shared heartfelt tributes honoring his memory and the impact he had on their lives both on and off the field.

After his collegiate career, Overton pursued professional opportunities in football, which included brief tenures with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the Canadian Football League and the Vienna Vikings in the European Football League.

In 2022, Overton was drafted by the Philadelphia Stars in the United States Football League (USFL). He played two seasons with the franchise, where he succeeded in making 42 receptions for 533 yards and five touchdowns.

Earlier this year, Overton was selected by the UFL’s Memphis Showboats during the USFL dispersal draft, marking another step in his professional journey.

His sudden passing has left a significant impact on those who knew him, both as a talented athlete and as a valued member of the Clemson community. Diondre Overton will be remembered for his contributions to the sport and the joy he brought to fans and teammates alike.
