Former YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki Passes Away at Age 56

Susan Wojcicki, former YouTube CEO and long-time executive at Google, passed away on Friday after battling cancer for two years. She was 56.

Google’s current CEO, Sundar Pichai, shared the news through a post on X, expressing deep sadness over her passing:

Unbelievably saddened by the loss of my dear friend @SusanWojcicki after two years of living with cancer. She is as core to the history of Google as anyone, and it’s hard to imagine the world without her. She was an incredible person, leader and friend who had a tremendous impact on the world and I’m one of countless Googlers who is better for knowing her. We will miss her dearly. Our thoughts with her family. RIP Susan.

Sundar Pichai | CEO of Google & Alphabet

Wojcicki began her journey with Google in 1998 as its 16th employee and the company’s first marketing manager. Remarkably, she had rented her Menlo Park, California garage to Google’s co-founders, Sergey Brin and Larry Page, the previous year for $1,700 per month.

Her two-decade career at Google saw her rise to pivotal positions within the organization, ultimately leading to her role as the CEO of YouTube. Wojcicki steered YouTube as its CEO for nine years before stepping down in early 2023.
