PARIS (AP) — Francisco Seco captures a striking photograph of Bulgarian gymnast Stiliana Nikolova during the rhythmic gymnastics competition at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.

Seco shares his excitement about this particular shot, noting it’s a sports photo he has always aspired to take. He was fortunate enough to capture the moment when Nikolova made a jump right in front of him. Instead of picking up the ball as expected, she hit it with her chest, creating a “BOOM” moment—right where the magic happened in the frame.

Seco explains that he positioned himself low near the exercise area to maximize his chances of securing good photos. Initially, he used a 70-200mm lens, as it was his first time photographing rhythmic gymnastics and he wanted to ensure he got some solid shots. As he grew more confident, he switched to a 300mm lens to capture the action more closely.

The photograph stands out due to the dramatic action of Nikolova’s jump. Her body is suspended in mid-air, with her head obscured behind her torso and the ball perfectly centered. This unusual composition lends a slightly eerie quality to the image. However, the cross-like shape formed by her body and arms adds a compelling visual interest, making it an image one can look at for an extended time.

Seco’s experience, compositional skill, and willingness to take risks with different lenses paid off, resulting in a memorable and captivating image from the Olympics.
