PARIS (AP) — French authorities have successfully thwarted three plots aimed at attacking the Olympic and Paralympic Games, as well as other events hosted in various cities. This announcement was made by the national counterterrorism prosecutor on Wednesday.

Prosecutor Olivier Christen revealed that the plots included intentions to target “Israeli institutions or representatives of Israel in Paris” during the Olympic festivities scheduled from July 26 to August 11. Importantly, he clarified that the Israeli team was not specifically singled out for an attack. No further details about the specific nature of the plots were provided.

Overall, five individuals were apprehended, including a minor, in connection with these three foiled plots related to the Summer Games. These suspects now face various terrorism-related charges while remaining in pre-trial detention, according to the prosecutor.

In anticipation of the Olympics and Paralympics, which concluded last week, France maintained its security at the highest alert level. Throughout the preparations, Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin consistently emphasized the various security threats posed by Islamic extremist groups, violent environmental activists, far-right factions, and potential cyberattacks originating from Russia and other adversaries.

In a specific incident in May, a significant arrest was made when the General Directorate of Internal Security detained an 18-year-old man from Chechnya. He was suspected of planning an attack targeting Olympic soccer events set to occur in the southern city of Saint-Etienne.

The prosecutor detailed that this planned attack aimed at “bar-type establishments around the Geoffroy stadium.” The suspect is believed to have intended to carry out “a violent action” motivated by the jihadist ideology linked to the Islamic State group.

Jihadist threats were a predominant concern in these foiled plots. It was noted that a staggering 80% of legal proceedings against suspected individuals involved extremist ideologies that continue to affect the youth in France. The Islamic State group is still active in disseminating propaganda which contributes to this ongoing issue.

In response to these threats, authorities implemented preventive measures that included intensified house searches and arrests in the lead-up to the Olympics. The prosecutor reported that in 2024 alone, police and security personnel conducted 936 house searches, marking a significant increase from just 153 searches the previous year.

The proactive stance taken by the French government reflects a broader commitment to maintaining security and safeguarding the integrity of high-profile events like the Olympics. With tensions heightened amid ongoing global conflicts, the focus on preventive actions has become increasingly crucial.

The foiled plots serve as a reminder of the persistent threats that nations face, especially during large-scale international events. France’s vigilant approach highlights the complexities and challenges involved in ensuring public safety in a volatile context. As the nation continues to recover from the repercussions of the global pandemic, these security measures are essential to reassuring both participants and spectators of their safety during such prestigious events.

Looking ahead, it is clear that the collaboration between intelligence agencies, law enforcement, and security personnel will remain integral in navigating potential threats. The successful prevention of these plots is testament to the effectiveness of these collective efforts in upholding security and public confidence during the Olympic Games.
