Oscar winners Robert Downey Jr. (“Oppenheimer”) and Da’Vine Joy Randolph (“The Holdovers”) and Oscar nominees Jodie Foster (“Nyad”) and Lily Gladstone (“Killers of the Flower Moon”) have extended their 2024 awards seasons by earning Emmy nominations in the same calendar year.

Downey is up for supporting actor in a limited series for “The Sympathizer,” in which he played four characters. Randolph is nominated for comedy guest actress for her role in “Only Murders in the Building.” Foster is aiming for the limited series lead Emmy for her role in “True Detective: Night Country,” whereas Gladstone is competing for limited series supporting actress for “Under the Bridge.”

Including Oscar nominees Ryan Gosling (“Barbie”) and Sterling K. Brown (“American Fiction”) for hosting “Saturday Night Live” and voicing an animated character on Prime Video’s “Invincible,” the total number of 2024 Oscar-Emmy actor crossovers increases. However, these particular roles are not being counted towards acting nominations.

Amongst this group, Foster stands out as a clear favorite for winning the Emmy. However, Downey Jr. also remains a strong contender in his respective category.

Over the years, only a few actors have managed to win both an Oscar and an Emmy in the same calendar year. These include George C. Scott (film: “Patton,” TV: “The Price,” 1971), Helen Hunt (“As Good as It Gets,” “Mad About You,” 1998), and Helen Mirren (“The Queen,” “Prime Suspect 7,” 2007). Mirren had already achieved the “acting triple crown” by receiving Emmy, Oscar, and Tony nominations within a 12-month period, further solidifying her status in the industry.

In 2019, there was another significant period of Oscar/Emmy crossovers. Joint nominees included Amy Adams (“Vice,” “Sharp Objects”), Mahershala Ali (“Green Book,” “True Detective”), Olivia Colman (“The Favourite,” “Fleabag”), and Sam Rockwell (“Vice,” “Fosse/Verdon”).

This year’s Emmy nominations for Greta Lee (“The Morning Show”) and Andrew Scott (“Ripley”) serve as compensations for the Oscars’ snubs of Lee’s performance in “Past Lives” and Scott’s in “All of Us Strangers.” Yet, Emmy voters seem to have overlooked Emma Stone for her performance in the Showtime series “The Curse,” which has been widely regarded as outstanding and even better than her Oscar-winning role in “Poor Things.”
