From “Riverdale” to Motorcycles, KJ Apa Embraces Feeling “Close to Death”

KJ Apa, famous for his role as Archie in “Riverdale,” takes on a grittier character in “One Fast Move,” written and directed by Kelly Blatz. Apa not only stars in the film but also serves as a producer. He plays Wes Neal, a young military man with a penchant for drag racing motorcycles. His reckless actions land him in jail, and six months later, he’s out with limited options. Desperate, Wes seeks out his estranged father Dean (Eric Dane), a fellow motorcycle racer he has never known.

As Wes integrates himself into Dean’s world, learning the ropes of motorcycle racing, he also encounters Abel (Edward James Olmos), who offers him work and mentorship. Wes then meets Camila (Maia Reficco), a waitress and nursing student, with whom he forms a romantic bond. However, Wes’s tumultuous past and conflicted emotions lead to tension with the significant people in his life, pushing him to reevaluate his choices.

“One Fast Move” includes three exhilarating racing scenes but is predominantly a character study. Apa excels as Wes, portraying a young man with a tough exterior who gradually reveals his sensitive side. The film delves deeply into Wes’s journey of self-discovery and determination.

In an interview with Salon, Apa discussed his motorcycle enthusiasm and the making of “One Fast Move.” Apa revealed that although he didn’t ride motorcycles before the film, the role sparked a newfound passion for it. He began riding extensively and even bought multiple motorcycles to prepare for the film’s demanding scenes. The adrenaline rush and danger associated with motorcycle racing captivated him.

Apa also shared his interest in other adrenaline-inducing activities like alpine climbing and bouldering. These activities require intense focus and presence, providing a near-meditative state due to their inherent risks and challenges.

The film explores complex themes of incomplete masculinity. Both Wes and his father, Dean, are depicted as men still finding their way. Wes’s aggressive outbursts reflect his underlying fear and shame, while his desire for a second chance in life mirrors Dean’s own struggles. Apa explained that Wes’s major turning point comes from his realization that if he is to do anything meaningful, it should be something he is passionate about, like motorcycle racing.

Wes’s hidden desire to connect with his father emerges through their shared passion for racing. This connection allows Wes to understand himself better. His relationship with Camila also plays a critical role, providing Wes with a space to be vulnerable. Additionally, Abel’s unwavering support offers Wes the paternal love he never experienced from his father.

Apa found the father-son dynamic particularly compelling. Although he has a positive relationship with his own father, he drew inspiration from friends who grew up without paternal figures. Wes’s journey of getting to know his father allows him to gain closure and unlock aspects of his identity.

Aside from the emotional depth, the film also includes scenes highlighting Apa’s physicality, such as a workout montage. Asked about being objectified and portrayed as a sex symbol, Apa dismissed it as a natural aspect of certain scenes, noting that his physical appearance is just a part of who he is.

Reflecting on his personality, Apa identified himself as a risk-taker, although he admitted that he’s learning to be less controlling and more accepting of life’s unpredictability. His move into producing stems from his desire to support projects that resonate with him, utilizing his resources to bring compelling stories to life.

Interestingly, despite his on-screen confidence, Apa confessed a fear of dancing, finding it a vulnerable act. He joked about the possibility of making a musical given his singing talents, although he finds singing just as intimidating.

“One Fast Move” debuts on Prime Video on Aug. 8.
