FX Continues Hot Streak with New Comedy “English Teacher”

In recent years, FX has emerged as a strong contender to HBO’s throne as the king of prestige TV. This year, FX even surpassed HBO in Emmy nominations, second only to Netflix. While it remains to be seen if FX can maintain this momentum over the years, the network’s upcoming shows indicate that it is here to stay.

On Tuesday, FX released the first trailer for its new comedy series, English Teacher. The show is created by and stars Brian Jordan Alvarez, known for his roles in Jane the Virgin, M3GAN, and the reboot of Will & Grace. Alvarez has also gained popularity through his viral TikToks, where he portrays a variety of characters, including the pop star TJ Mack.

In English Teacher, Alvarez plays Evan Marquez, a high school teacher in Austin, Texas. The show follows Marquez as he navigates office politics and modern youth culture. Over the eight-episode season, Evan deals with relationships, his students, and fellow faculty members while trying to answer the question: can you really be your full self at your job?

The cast includes Stephanie Koenig as Gwen Sanders, Evan’s best friend, Enrico Colantoni as Principal Grant Moretti, Sean Patton as gym teacher Markie Hillridge, and Carmen Christopher as the questionably helpful guidance counselor, Rick.

The first two episodes of English Teacher will premiere on FX and Hulu on September 2.
