George Clooney Discusses His Op-Ed’s Impact on U.S. Presidential Race

George Clooney has praised President Joe Biden for stepping down as the Democratic presidential candidate to pave the way for Kamala Harris, calling the action “the most selfless thing that anybody has done since George Washington.”

Clooney made these remarks while attending the Venice Film Festival for the premiere of Jon Watt’s Wolfs, where he was joined by co-star Brad Pitt.

When asked about his recent op-ed for The New York Times titled “I Love Joe Biden, But We Need a New Nominee” published on July 10, Clooney took the chance to commend the 81-year-old President. “The person who should be applauded is the President who did the most selfless thing that anybody has done since George Washington,” Clooney shared at the conference.

“All of the machinations that got us there, none of that’s going to be remembered, and it shouldn’t be,” he continued. “What should be remembered is the selfless act of someone who did the hardest thing to do. You know we’ve seen it all around the world, and for someone to say, I think there’s a better way forward, he gets all the credit, and that’s really the truth.”

Clooney and Pitt brought their engaging dynamic to the festival for the world premiere of Watt’s action comedy, in which they play competing criminal fixers accidentally assigned to the same job. The two movie stars and real-life friends exchanged light-hearted banter, accolades, and insights about filmmaking at a press conference in Italy ahead of the world premiere of Wolfs.

In Wolfs, Pitt and Clooney portray professional fixers hired to cover up the same high-profile crime. The story takes a turn as the two “lone wolves” are forced to collaborate, leading to a night that spirals out of control in unforeseen ways.

Just days before arriving in Venice, it was reported that Watts has secured a deal with Apple to write and direct a sequel to Wolfs. It is still unclear whether Clooney and Pitt have agreed to participate in the follow-up.

Wolfs will debut on Apple TV+ on September 27, following a limited theatrical release through Sony on September 20.
