George Clooney Fires Back at Quentin Tarantino After Recent Diss

George Clooney has recently addressed a remark made by director Quentin Tarantino that took a jab at his career. Last summer, Tarantino questioned Clooney’s status as a true “movie star” of his generation during an interview with Deadline. Clooney, in a new conversation with GQ this week, revealed that Tarantino’s comments continue to bother him.

Clooney participated in a profile interview with his friend and frequent collaborator Brad Pitt, which GQ published on Wednesday. While discussing how actors and directors choose collaborators at the highest level, Tarantino’s name surfaced. However, Clooney expressed reluctance to delve deeply into that topic due to his recent qualms with the acclaimed director.

The controversy traces back to Tarantino’s July 2023 interview with Deadline at the Cannes Film Festival. Tarantino discussed how the modern notion of a “movie star” has evolved over the years, suggesting that studios prioritize existing talent over nurturing new stars. He acknowledged some A-listers like Margot Robbie, Bradley Cooper, and Julia Roberts as fitting the “movie star” label.

When the interviewer mentioned Clooney, Tarantino’s response was dismissive: “It’s been a long while since I think George Clooney has drawn anybody to an audience. When was the last time he had a hit in this millennium?”

This critique was on Clooney’s mind during the GQ interview, where he and Pitt were asked if they felt competitive for the attention of top directors. Clooney drew attention to their past collaboration with Tarantino on “From Dusk Till Dawn,” in which they played brothers. Pitt remarked that Tarantino’s performance was “pretty good,” to which Clooney wryly responded, “He was okay in it.”

Clooney then elaborated: “Quentin said some s- about me recently, so I’m a little irritated by him. He did some interview where he was naming movie stars, and he was talking about you, and somebody else, and then this guy goes, ‘Well, what about George?’ He goes, ‘He’s not a movie star.’ And then he literally said something like, ‘Name me a movie since the millennium.'”

Reflecting on this, Clooney recalled with disbelief: “I was like, ‘Since the millennium?’ That’s kind of my whole f-ing career! So now I’m like, all right, dude, f- off. I don’t mind giving him s-. He gave me s-.”

To date, Tarantino has not made a public comment regarding Clooney’s recent remarks or the ongoing tension. Clooney and Pitt are set to co-star in the upcoming crime thriller “Wolfs,” which premieres on Sept. 27.
