George Strait, ‘Rebel Ridge,’ Astro Bot, ‘Slow Horses,’ Mormon Influencers

“The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives,” a docuseries following young wives in Utah, and the suspenseful thriller “Rebel Ridge” are among the new television, films, music, and games headed to a device near you. Also worth your time are “Slow Horses,” Astro Bot’s debut on PlayStation 5, and George Strait’s 31st studio album, “Cowboys and Dreamers.”

Jeremy Saulnier, known for his lean, suspenseful thrillers, brings “Rebel Ridge” to Netflix on Friday, Sept. 6. The film stars Aaron Pierre as an ex-Marine who finds himself caught in a violent clash with a corrupt small-town police department, led by Don Johnson. The film is engrossing and stylish, with Pierre’s magnetic presence adding to its appeal.

“The Boy and the Heron,” Hayao Miyazaki’s latest creation, starts streaming Friday, Sept. 6, on Max. The film follows a 12-year-old boy named Mahito who, after losing his mother during World War II, finds a portal to a fantastical realm. The animated feature won an Oscar and was Miyazaki’s first film to top the box office for a weekend.

George Strait will release “Cowboys and Dreamers” on Friday, his 31st studio album. The Texas troubadour offers a collection of country hits, including a collaboration with Chris Stapleton and a cover of Waylon Jennings’ “Waymore’s Blues.” The album also features the Jimmy Buffet-inspired track “MIA Down in MIA.”

The Dare, the musical project of Harrison Patrick Smith, taps into electroclash revival with his album “What’s Wrong With New York?” set to release on Sept. 6. His success in New York City’s nightlife, propelled by his hit “Girls,” has made him a notable figure. The album is expected to continue his nostalgic electroclash sound.

MJ Lenderman, known for his work with Asheville’s alt-country indie rockers Wednesday, is releasing his new solo album “Morning Fireworks.” The album showcases his laid-back songwriting style, blending humor and emotional depth, making it a contender for one of 2024’s most exciting releases.

Sylvester’s legacy gets a revival with “Live at The Opera House,” a collection of over two hours of material from his 1979 performance at the San Francisco War Memorial Opera House. The box set will be released on Friday, Sept. 6, including exclusive photographs and liner notes, with a streaming version also available.

“Slow Horses,” the acclaimed British spy series on Apple TV+, returns for its fourth season. Starring Gary Oldman as Jackson Lamb, the series focuses on MI5 agents who have made significant mistakes. The show has nine Primetime Emmy nominations, including outstanding drama series and lead actor for Oldman, with the new season rated 100% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.

Hulu premieres “The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives” on Friday, Sept. 6. The docuseries explores the lives of young wives in Utah who are part of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and online influencers. The series delves into their balancing act between family life, Church standing, and their online personas, especially after a sex scandal attracts global attention.

“The Wonderland Massacre & The Secret History of Hollywood” airs on MGM+ on Sunday, Sept. 8. This series, narrated by crime writer Michael Connelly, revisits the 1981 Wonderland Avenue massacre in Los Angeles, an event that inspired the film “Boogie Nights.”

Astro Bot makes his debut on the PlayStation 5 in a full-fledged adventure following his initial appearance in Sony’s virtual reality headset game. In this new game, Astro Bot must reassemble his crew by traveling across more than 50 planets. The game, launching on Friday, Sept. 6, offers a blend of platforming and acrobatic flying adventures.

“The Casting of Frank Stone” is a new collaboration between horror game developers Behaviour Interactive and Supermassive Games. Set in the world of “Dead By Daylight,” this solo game follows four teenagers who decide to make a movie about a serial killer, Frank Stone. The gore-filled adventure begins on Tuesday, available on PlayStation 5, Xbox X/S, and PC.
