Giants Sign Third Baseman Matt Chapman to $151M Contract Extension

On September 5, the San Francisco Giants announced the signing of Matt Chapman, third baseman, to a substantial six-year contract extension worth $151 million. This deal underscores the franchise’s commitment to solidifying its roster for the future.

Chapman’s contract includes an annual salary of $25 million through the 2030 season. Additionally, he will receive a signing bonus of $1 million in 2025 and is mandated to contribute annually to the Giants Community Fund, with donations totaling $125,000.

The 31-year-old Chapman was drafted 25th overall by the Oakland Athletics in the 2014 MLB Draft and made his MLB debut in 2017. He earned an All-Star selection in 2019 and was later traded to the Toronto Blue Jays in 2022, where he continued to build on his impressive career.

Earlier this year, the Giants had initially signed Chapman to a three-year contract worth $54 million. His recent extension effectively replaces the final two years of that contract, reflecting both his value to the team and his on-field performance.

This season, Chapman has demonstrated significant power at the plate, achieving a batting average of .247 with 22 home runs and 69 RBIs, alongside 33 doubles and a personal-best of 13 stolen bases. His performance places him in an elite group as one of only two third basemen in Giants history, joining Freddie Lindstrom, who have recorded at least 30 doubles, 20 home runs, and 10 stolen bases in a single season.

Throughout his career, Chapman boasts a solid .241 batting average with 177 homers and 24 stolen bases across his first 1,004 plate appearances. His consistent performance and versatility have made him a crucial part of the Giants’ lineup.

Currently, the Giants hold a record of 68 wins and 72 losses, placing them fourth in the National League West division. They find themselves 16 games behind the leading Los Angeles Dodgers, who stand at 84 wins and 56 losses, and they are 8.5 games out of contention for a wild card spot.

Looking ahead, the Giants are set to face off against the Arizona Diamondbacks, who currently hold a record of 79 wins and 61 losses. This important matchup is scheduled for 3:45 p.m. EDT on Thursday in San Francisco, and it will be crucial for the Giants as they aim to improve their standing in the competitive National League West.
