Gina Gershon Almost ‘Broke Tom Cruise’s Nose’ While Filming ‘Cocktail’

Gina Gershon recently shared an amusing incident from her career. She nearly broke Tom Cruise’s nose while filming her first sex scene. They were working on the 1988 movie Cocktail, and despite the mishap, Gershon remembered Cruise as a “gentleman” and “protective” of her.

During an appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, Gershon reminisced about the experience. She mentioned that the scene began under the covers and she had warned Cruise about being ticklish. “In one take he grabbed my stomach and I kneed him right in the nose,” she said. Worried she had injured him, Cruise reassured her by saying it was his fault. “He was so protective over me. He was great,” she added. When asked if Cruise took care of her, Gershon responded, “Totally”.

In Cocktail, Tom Cruise portrayed Brian Flanagan, a business student who bartends to support himself. Elisabeth Shue played his love interest, and Gina Gershon played a photographer with whom Cruise’s character has a brief romance. Despite the film earning $171.5 million worldwide, it received negative reviews from critics and won two Razzie Awards for Worst Picture and Worst Screenplay.

Gershon also shared another significant career moment during the interview. She recalled being advised by former agents that playing a lesbian in the movie Bound would ruin her career. Directed by Lana and Lilly Wachowski, the 1996 thriller featured Gershon as Corky, a role opposite Jennifer Tilly’s Violet. Despite warnings, she believed in the script and parted ways with her agents, saying, “Oh, well, I guess if you can’t represent me, I’ll go somewhere else. No hard feelings.”

Looking ahead, Gershon is set to appear in the sci-fi film Borderlands, which features an ensemble cast including Cate Blanchett, Edgar Ramírez, Jamie Lee Curtis, Ariana Greenblatt, and Kevin Hart. The film adapts a popular video game of the same name and follows bounty hunter Lilith, who joins a group of misfits to find a missing girl on her home planet.

Early reviews of Borderlands have been less than favorable. The Independent’s Clarisse Loughrey described it as “a total disaster,” citing miscast actors and an impenetrable script. She warned that it could alienate fans of the game and confuse casual viewers. Borderlands is set to release in theaters on August 9.
