Gina Gershon Feared She Broke Tom Cruise’s Nose During ‘Cocktail’ Love Scene

Gina Gershon recently recounted a memorable experience from her early acting career where she almost injured her co-star Tom Cruise while filming their first love scene in the 1988 movie Cocktail. Despite the mishap, Cruise remained a true gentleman throughout the ordeal.

Gershon shared the story on Watch What Happens Live, explaining that during a scene where Cruise’s character was supposed to start under the covers, he accidentally grabbed her stomach. “At one point, he starts off under the covers, and I told him I was very ticklish,” she explained. “I said, ‘No, no, don’t ever do that.’” She continued, “In one take — I think he wanted a reaction — and he grabbed my stomach, and I kneed him right in the nose. I was like, ‘Oh, my God, I just broke Tom Cruise’s nose.’ He’s like, ‘No, no, you told me.’ I’m like, ‘I’m so sorry.’ He was like, ‘No, it was my fault.’” Gershon described Cruise as being “so overprotective” and “great” during the scene, demonstrating his professional and considerate nature.

In Cocktail, Cruise plays Brian, a business student and bartender who moves to Jamaica to save money to open his own bar. He falls in love with artist Jordan, played by Elisabeth Shue. Gershon’s character, Coral, is a photographer who dates Brian but later cheats on him with his mentor, Doug, portrayed by Bryan Brown. This betrayal prompts Brian’s move to Jamaica.

As Gershon reminisced about filming, she also mentioned Cruise’s then-wife Mimi Rogers, who was frequently on set as they had just gotten married. Despite Rogers’ presence, Gershon noted that she and Cruise would often incorporate kissing into their scenes. “Every scene it was like, ‘Should we kiss in the scene?’ ‘Oh yeah, I think we should kiss,’” she said, emphasizing that it was her first love scene ever.

Gershon appeared on the show alongside her Borderlands co-star Cate Blanchett. The pair were promoting their new movie adaptation of the popular video game, which premiered last Friday in theaters. Directed by Eli Roth, the film boasts a star-studded cast including Jamie Lee Curtis, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, Edgar Ramirez, and Ariana Greenblatt.

Meanwhile, Cruise is preparing for an exciting and high-profile public appearance. He is set to participate in the closing ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics. Reports suggest that Cruise will perform a live stunt during the ceremony as the Olympic flag is handed over to Los Angeles, the host city for the 2028 Summer Olympics.
